This has been a good week for our community and our club. The teams battling the Mosquito Fire are making headway, the smoke is starting to clear, and we are blessed with rain! And our club had a fun and lively social meeting last Thursday at The National when we welcomed NC Police Chief Dan Foss into our club. We look forward to hearing more from Dan when he gives us his presentation at our Nov. 3 meeting.
Even though we don’t have an official Youth Service Chair, our club continues to be actively engaged with youth activities. At this Thursday’s meeting, we will get to hear from two high schoolers whom we sponsored to attend RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly) this past summer. These visits from the youth who go through this life-changing week are always so inspirational to hear. Later on in the year, we’ll be having a visit from the young people on the Robotics Team (and their robot), which is sure to be fun. And just this week, our club was contacted by Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL) to find out whether we wanted to re-activate our efforts to establish an Interact Club at their school…and we do! (More on that later).
Be sure to read your Rotario to watch for other service projects coming up in the next few months…and circle your calendars for our biggest fundraiser in three years: Hungry Games II—Second Helpings! It’s happening November 13, 4-8pm, at Peace Lutheran Church. (See below). Information on admission tickets and raffle ticket sales coming soon.
This week we return to Bistro 221 for lunch. We will celebrate recent RYLA students Jason Lehman and Jessica Lake as they share their experiences at RYLA this summer. Please RSVP for lunch and a very memorable program!
Nevada City Rotary and PDG Doug McDonald were proud to induct Chief Dan Foss as the newest member of Nevada City Rotary at our Thursday Social meeting on September 15! Dan joined the Rotary Club of Madera in 2019. Dan shared a snippet about why he became a Rotarian because of the pivotal role Rotary played in the launch and expansion of OLIVE to create a safe house for young girls who are victims of sex trafficking. We will learn more when he is speaker for our November 3 meeting.
We are delighted to WELCOME Chief Dan to our Club and our Community, along with his wife Lisa and their 16-year-old daughter Vivian!

Under the leadership of Science Teacher Byron Bird, the new Interact Club at Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning is off to a fast start this term.
A former Interactor himself, Byron contacted Tom Ryan to report that the students have held several organizing meetings and are preparing to apply for their new Interact Club charter through Rotary International. The organizing students aren't waiting for an official charter to launch service projects. On Saturday September 17, Tom and Cathy joined the Interact students and Byron at a work project packing food boxes for Interfaith Ministries.
At our September board meeting, our Club Board approved a motion for Nevada City Rotary to sponsor the Sierra Academy Interact Club. Watch this space as updates unfold!
