I Want to End Polio

During and after the interview on KNCO Friday with our interviewer Tom Fitzsimmons, the co-presidents of Grass Valley South Club along with Tom,  Nancy Kemp and I got into a discussion on polio.  Rotary and other organizations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have worked tirelessly for decades to eradicate polio around the world.  But the last mile of the campaign still has a few stumbling blocks.  For example, poliovirus was discovered in sewage water in New York City and surrounding counties this year. Why? A major reason is that vaccine coverage for children aged 6 months to 5 years has fallen since 2019.

So, as our club members march in our End Polio Now walk on October 22 and solicit donations, we can inform the public that children everywhere need to be fully vaccinated (4 doses).  The oral polio vaccine has saved millions of lives and prevented paralysis.  Even more, World Polio Day is a great opportunity to highlight global efforts to eradicate this devastating disease and the fact that we’ve achieved a 99.9% reduction in wild poliovirus transmission on our planet.

See you on the 22nd in front of Treats Ice Cream in downtown Nevada City with our End Polio Now T-Shirts!  Meanwhile, take a look at the October 2022 issue of the Rotary magazine for an update of eradication efforts.

Our Hungry Games II fundraiser is coming up fast!  We can all contribute to its success by selling the tickets Gayle Denney distributed. A big thank you to Gayle Denney who is managing ticket sales.  If you have not received yours or want more to sell, please contact Gayle at: ggdenney@gmail.com. Raffle tickets for our Winner Take All $1,000+ restaurant package are $100 and include entry for 1 person.  Event tickets are $25 in advance; $35 at the door.

Yours in service,

Nicole McNeely Awarded for Vocational Service
Nevada City Rotary was proud to recognize Nicole McNeely with its 2022-23 Community Vocational Service Award.
The plaque, presented by Gayle Denney, states that the award was presented to Nicole McNeely in honor of and with sincere appreciation for your strong leadership of The Nevada County Food Bank exemplifying the ideals and aspirations of Rotary’s 4-Way Test of the things we think, say, and do.

As Executive Director, Nicole has led the Food Bank through significant growth and strategically addressing critical community needs through the COVID pandemic. In July, the Food Bank of Nevada County received its largest funding grant ever, a one-million dollar award from the California Department of Social Services. The grant will help expand its capacity to feed community members faced with food insecurity.  The expansion includes purchasing a new warehouse unit next to their existing location along with food handling equipment and a commercial baler to compress recyclable materials.

Socials Moving to Round Table Pizza
Nevada City Rotary is moving its 1st and 3rd Thursday social gatherings to Round Table Pizza at 686 Sutton Way, near Staples in the Brunswick basin.

The site has a number of advantages: the staff will reserve the meeting room in the back for our club only, without conditions, on those two days of the month; we can use the room for free; the room is quite spacious, has plenty of tables and chairs, and there is plenty of parking outdoors. You can purchase your choice of beverages (wine, beer, & sodas) and food (pizza, appetizers, & generous salad bar.) Because of these advantages, our board has taken a vote and unanimously agreed to make the change, beginning October 20th.

For October 2022, we’ll meet as follows:
Oct. 6 - Last social at The National Hotel
Oct. 13- Lunch at Bistro 211 (Please RSVP)
Oct. 20 - First visit at Round Table Pizza
Oct. 27- Lunch at Bistro 211 (Please RSVP)

Join us each Thursday for fun gatherings and informative meetings!

Nevada City Polio Walk Saturday, October 22

Plan to join Nevada City Rotarians as we host an End Polio Now Walk-About downtown Nevada City on Saturday, October 22nd in celebration of World Polio Day.  Since the Nevada City Farmers Market is open from 8:30am-1pm, we plan to set up an End Polio Now table in front of the Firehouse Museum next to Treats as we have done in recent years.

Some members will do a walk-about around 10 or 11am down Broad Street and through the market (mindful that solicitation in the Market is strictly prohibited).  Members are encouraged to wear their new (or older) End Polio Now T-Shirts both at the table and during the walk.  Watch for details from Lynda.

If you ordered a new End Polio Now T-Shirt, our T-shirts have arrived! See Carolyn if you have not received yours.  Your cost for the shirt, tax and shipping rounds up to $18.  Thank you!
