Greetings to all Nevada City Rotary members and friends,
At our social meeting last week we had the chance to share comments that we received in the course of our one-on-one interviews we did with members last Fall. We had quite a lively and informative session, with some additional comments received Thursday for further improvement of our club. If you missed it and would like to learn more, contact either Chris or Carolyn for a list of the 10 Things that are Working Well, and the 10 Things that Need Improvement.
Here is a synthesis that Chris wrote of most of the comments, incorporating members’ ideas of what they might imagine as the “Ideal Club”; not every person would agree with every point, nor is every point necessarily achievable, but as the name says, this might be an ideal:
The Club would be a medium-sized club with approx. 35-45 members, and have a wide range of ages and diversity.
The Club would meet in Nevada City, at the same venue each week
The venue would have plenty of room; good Wi-Fi connection; and the ability to purchase or bring food, at reasonable prices
Activities would consist of engaging programs, meaningful service projects, and fun socials that would encourage new members to join and current members to stay and participate
Relationships would be respectful, supportive, and follow the Four-Way Test
At this week’s meeting Thursday Jan. 26, we will be having a special guest join us by Zoom: one of the clients that member Dan Foss and his team helped rescue from human trafficking through their non-profit The Olive Project. We heard Part 1 of Dan’s presentation about this grave problem a month ago, and now we will hear Part 2. This promises to be a very thought-provoking and inspiring program. Please join us at Bistro 221 at 12 noon on Jan. 26; be sure to RSVP by the evening before. Click here to RSVP:
Hopefully you’ve all gotten a forwarded email from Lynda Guthrie, who is visiting our sponsored student Wendy in Guatemala. Lynda will return on Jan. 31, and will be giving us a presentation in March about her travels and the work that Rotary is doing in Guatemala. Stay tuned to the Rotario…it should be interesting!
Four local Rotary Clubs are proud to partner with Bright Futures for Youth (BFFY) to build what will be called the Rotary Café in the new NEO Youth Center. The Grass Valley, 49er Breakfast, Grass Valley South, and Nevada City Rotary Clubs each contributed $2,500. District 5190 matched the $10,000 Club balance with a $12,500 grant plus almost $2,500 in District Bonus Dollar contributions for a total grant of $25,000 (with some rounding).
In addition to the District Grant, Grass Valley Rotary contributed $15,000 in honor of late Club member Mike Johnson. The Clubs presented a check representing the $40,000 donation to Executive Director Jennifer Singer and NEO Program Director Halli Ellis-Edwards at Grass Valley Rotary's regular meeting on Monday January 23, 2023.
A small cadre of Nevada City Rotarians took advantage of the mid-January sunshine to do a bit of cleanup and replenish blubs planted in Penzance Park. Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, Tom Ryan, Chris Newsom, Walt Stickel, Tom and Robin Milam planted over 200 daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses.
It is a tradition we enjoy as a time for camaraderie , digging in the dirt, and enjoying Cathy’s cookies! And of course it has a history ...
