Greetings to all Nevada City Rotary members and friends,
As I write this presidents’ message, I’m filled with gratitude for having all of you members and your dedication to Rotary and its purpose. At last Thursday’s meeting I asked two members to speak about the projects of their Avenue of Service and one to give an update on the District Conference (See Conference details below.) The sharing spontaneously evolved into at least seven announcements of forthcoming activities we support. The Nevada City Rotary Club rocks! We are “people of action” out of our mutual concern and caring for those less fortunate and the environment in our communities around the world, from Nevada County to Ukraine, to Baja, Mexico and more.
The Sewing Circle - which is making menstrual hygiene kits - met on Saturday for a workshop to learn and carry out all the steps in making the kits. We were joined by members of the 49er club (including three men!), with whom we share a District Grant, friends of Rotarians and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Nevada City. Members of that church have been active for 6+ years in making the kits. The workshop was organized by Lynda, Carolyn, and Deborah Wilder of the 49er club. I’m proud to say that our group is starting to expand and making more progress in constructing the menstrual hygiene kits, thanks partly to Lynda’s diligence and all our collaboration. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun with us; if you’re interested, just call/e-mail Lynda, Carolyn or Chris.
Note: Even though our grant will terminate in June, this project has longer-term sustainability in that we are acquiring supplies and equipment to enable us to continue for another two-three years with our grant money. Also, given that the materials are all washable, girls can wear them for up to three years.
