Just as our new International President, Jennifer Jones, is leading Rotary differently, your co-presidents recognize we’re taking you through several changes in our efforts to re-invigorate our club. We’ve added activities to the meetings, like Joke of the Day and Rotary Magazine report, so members have a more active role. We are pleased with our new digs – Bistro 221 and the National Hotel and hope you find these settings more conducive to interactive meetings. May the website conversion to the ClubRunner platform be a pleasant change for all of us. We’d love to hear your feedback on how your experience of our Rotary club is going.
At the August 11 meeting, for those who weren’t there, District Governor Jeff gave out these awards: Quiet Rotarian to Lynda Guthrie, Heart of Service to Tom Milam, 50 years of Rotary service to PDG Doug McDonald, and the Paul Harris +3 award to Paul Boch. Be sure to let them know we’re very grateful for and proud of all their contributions!
Volunteering opportunity: Our Global Scholar, Evani Radiya-Dixit, is our speaker at the August 25 lunch meeting. Evani has just returned from Cambridge, England where she’s been conducting research on police use of facial recognition technology. She’ll be coming from San Jose and staying here as our guest the 25th and 26th. This is a great time to show her our hospitality. At this Thursday’s meeting we’ll have a sign-up sheet to engage in a few activities with Evani. She’s expressed an interest in going on a hike or outdoor activity, a visit around town, visiting a garden and artsy shops, sharing a (vegetarian) meal, and live music. Little does she know that Nevada City has all this and more! We’ll discuss at Thursday’s meeting. Please remember toRSVP for lunch meetings.
For all meetings at the National Hotel: Unless we pay for a bartender to be assigned to the upstairs bar, that bar will not be open. So, please come a little early to order your drinks from the downstairs bar before the meeting begins.
August 18 meeting at 5:30pm:Cameron Redford: Black Sierra Honey, Co, Why Black Hives Matter. See Story below.
When Cameron Redford came to Nevada County as an apprentice to a local beekeeper, he knew that his future and passion was in sustainable and environmentally conscious agriculture. From his first meeting with the hives, he realized what all the buzz was about.
After several years of mastering the craft and as his mentor was retiring, he gathered his support and resources around him to take the next step. Through a farm succession program, a successful crowd-funding campaign, and widespread community support, he was able to start Black Sierra Honey. The future is bright, and we're excited for you to be a part of it.
As a 2021 Rotary Global Grant Scholar, I spent nine months in the beautiful and quaint city of Cambridge, England, where a warm day felt like California in winter. There, I conducted research at the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge.
Over the past year, I have greatly enjoyed my time with the Grass Valley and Nevada City Rotary clubs. I cherish the inquisitive questions of members about my research and the tradition of happy/sad bucks! I also appreciate joining dinners with the Cambridge Sawston club and learning about members’ diverse life paths.
Nevada City Rotary had a delightful visit with DG Jeff Gabriel for our first Thursday Lunch at Bistro 221. It was a fun and inspiring meeting!
DG Jeff opened talking about Rotary International and RIP Jennifer Jones' theme "Imagine Rotary" and highlighted the meaning of the design elements in the this year's Rotary theme logo. He went on to expand on his own D5190 "Together we are one" logo.
And such a good sport, he stepped in as our Jokester of the Week with some fun jokes about trees!
