We not only have had several changes under our new co-presidents, all throughout July we’ve had outstanding speakers and educational entertainment at our meetings, for which we thank Chris and Nancy.
This Thursday, our speaker is Sean Grayson, the newly hired City Manager of Nevada City. I expect we’ll learn quite a bit about what it takes to keep a small-town government running smoothly. We’ll be at The National Hotel, our club’s old “stomping grounds” for many years. (And now it’s quite fashionably furnished and decorated.)

August 11 meeting at 12:15 pm.: Jeff Gabriel, our District Governor, will be coming on his official visit with his wife Jane. Prior to our lunch meeting, Cathy Wilcox-Barnes will lead them on a short historic tour of Nevada City, which we can join as we like. After lunch Jeff will meet with the Board and Officers. Jeff is a very personable leader and says he and Jane are really looking forward to meeting with all of us. Come one, come all – bring guests!
August 25 meeting at 12:15: Our special speaker & visitor is none other than Evani Radiya-Dixit, our Global Scholar who’s just returned from Cambridge, England where she’s been conducting research on police use of facial recognition technology.
Our club’s volunteers reach more and more people, including the California CareForce clinicians and volunteers, the Children’s Festival, the school supplies donation through Community Beyond Violence which served at least 30 Kids in Area 4, and the ongoing plastics pick-up campaign. Nevada City Rotary is pleased to welcome our new City Manager as guest speaker for our first 5:30pm social at The National Exchange Hotel Thursday August 4, 2022.
Sean Grayson was appointed as the City Manager is Nevada City in February of 2022 bring his public service career full circle, returning home.
Sean was raised in Nevada City and was a valedictorian graduate of Nevada Union High School. As a high school athlete Sean was drawn to the team sport aspect of the fire service and entered public service employment more than 27 years ago as a firefighter paramedic. Sean has had assignments in both operational and administrative capacities, including serving in essentially every rank in the fire service, culminating with his appointment as Fire Chief in the City of Rialto.
Starting in August, we will be meeting at not one, but two new venues: For our 5:30pm socials on the first and third Thursdays, we will be meeting at The National Exchange Hotel, in their brand-new second floor reception area. And for our 12:15pm lunch meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays, we’ll be meeting in the back room of Bistro 221 on Broad St, right next door to The National.
