Feeling Grateful

As I look out my window, I see opaque air that looks like San Francisco fog, and the Air Quality Index is 397—hazardous for all groups.  It’s hard not to feel like it’s oppressive.  But as bad as it may be here in Nevada County, we are so fortunate that our homes are intact, and brave firefighters are fighting under extremely difficult conditions to keep us safe. There is always something to be grateful for, if we just look around!
Meanwhile, our intrepid co-president Carolyn and her husband Bob are getting into some cool, wet weather in Cornwall!
After this, they’re headed off to France, before returning home the last week of September.
We have the mid-term elections coming up in November, and one of the proposals that will be voted on is Measure V—Nevada County’s “Wildfire Prevention, Emergency Services and Disaster Readiness” Measure.  While Rotary is a non-political organization, and cannot take a position on either candidates or propositions, we can learn about the provisions of a given piece of legislation.  Accordingly, our guest this Thursday Sept. 15 at 5:30pm at the National Hotel’s 2nd floor Salon will be Caleb Dardick, Asst. CEO of Nevada County.  Caleb will give us background info. on why the supervisors proposed this measure, what it does and does not provide for, and what the financial impacts will be.  Come join us, and be ready with questions!
Volunteers needed - October 4, 2022
Nevada County Health and Human Services is again offering a free drive through flu shot clinic on Tuesday October 4, 2022. We have a special relationship supporting these flu clinics. As in past years, we need 6 volunteers to assist with check-in and traffic control. Please let Chris know if you can assist - we need 3 more to signup!
May you all stay safe and well,
Chris (and Carolyn)

Hungry Games II

It’s time for second helpings! The Nevada City Rotary Club is once again presenting “The Hungry Games II” a major fundraiser dedicated to food, wine and the fine art of gourmet cooking on Sunday, November 13, from 4 to 8pm at Peace Lutheran Church.
Our Fundraising Committee has been working diligently to put plans in place for our 2022 Hungry Games II Second Helpings event Sunday November 13, 2022.   Church’s Fellowship Center is an inviting venue with lots of amenities for hosting an event such as this.  Jason Jillson and The Ham Stand crew are planning a fun Iron Chef's Cooking Competition.
Once again, we will host an exclusive restaurant package raffle. We are also working with Pacific Auction Company who will host a live and silent auction with an amazing assortment of auction items and excursions.  Watch this space as details unfold.
Have we tickled your taste buds?  Much more to come.

Menstral Kits for Chiapas MX
The Rotary Clubs of Nevada City and Nevada City 49er Breakfast have been awarded a District 5190 multi-club grant to provide sustainable menstrual hygiene kits for Indigenous girls and women of Chiapas, Mx. The objective of this grant is to make it possible for young girls to stay in school, avoid pregnancy, and gain greater potential for economic gain through menstrual health and sexual education training provided with the menstrual hygiene kits.
The two Nevada City Clubs are sponsoring sewing circles comprised of local Rotary women and their friends to create reusable cloth menstrual hygiene kits that will be delivered to girls and women in Chiapas by the Rotary Club of Oriente de Tuxtla. The $5,625 grant funds the purchase of cutting machines, tools, fabrics, and other supplies plus shipping the completed kits to Chiapas.
