Greetings to all Nevada City Rotary members and friends,
We had a great meeting last Thursday with several guests and a large attendance. Our speaker, Jennifer, a graduate of the OLIVE program founded by our own police chief Dan Foss, related her experience of being recruited into sex trafficking as a prostitute. Thanks to the OLIVE program, she has successfully escaped that dehumanizing lifestyle and today leads a well-balanced life with a husband, good job, and working toward a bachelor’s degree.
While forced prostitution is less visible in Nevada County, it is a prominent issue in the Sacramento area where in 2018, District 5180 was awarded the biggest approved Rotary Grant for the US ever to combat Human Trafficking.
Welcome newest member Lynn Skrukrud with her mother Tina Skrukrud, sponsor DGN Dennis and Cathy who inducted Tina. We as a Club are honored to attract all our vibrant new members. We have met our membership goal of five new members for the year- yay! - and expect to expand it very soon.
Celebration of life events are often serious and tearfully emotional. But that was not the case Sunday at the “Gone Fishing’” party for Annette Geare. The testimonials were hilarious, moving and full of love especially by daughter Sacha. Annette loved and was loved by LOTS of people. In addition to all us Rotarians from several clubs across the District, we were surrounded by relatives, friends she grew up with in Berkeley and from elsewhere, along with former colleagues. (We probably totaled about 150 persons.) We will miss her big smile, laughter, sweet nature and wisecrack humor.
Many thanks to Carol Scofield, GV South Rotary, for taking on the role of master of ceremonies.
Join us for this week's social at Round Table Pizza.
Sometimes words are not enough, and that's how we feel about the donation from the Rotary Clubs in Nevada County that came together and donated $40,000 to the new NEO Youth Center under construction at Bright Futures for Youth on Litton Hill. The donation will specifically support the NEO Cafe portion of the NEO Youth Center (food is arguably the best way to connect with children and young adults).
So much appreciation to the Rotary Club of Grass Valley, Rotary Club of Grass Valley South, Rotary Club of Nevada City and 49er Breakfast Rotary Club for coming together to change so many lives. If you know a Rotary member, please give them a hug and thank them for their commitment to the community and supporting our efforts.
From Jennifer Litton, Executive Director and the BFFY (including NEO) team
