Rotario - October 13, 2016

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.

This Week's Lunch Meeting - Anita Bagwell – Director, Western Sierra YouthBuild Center

Our speaker spent her early years in Sacramento and went on to college in Chico. After spending some time in Yuba City, she moved to Nevada City 21 years ago. Anita has 22 years experience a teacher and 9 years as an administrator while being associated with various schools in Nevada County. She has been principal at the following facilities; Juvenile Hall, Earle Jamieson Court School,  Nevada Union Adult Education, Wayne Brown Correctional Facility,  and North Point Academy.  In 2014, Anita opened Western Sierra YouthBuild for the John Muir Charter School, where she is the Site Director for the only vocational training school in Nevada County.  Her hobbies include cooking & gardening.

Last Week's Meeting - Rita Fuenzalida, owner of Java John's Coffee

Rita, who is originally from Chile, gave an energetic talk about the coffee shop that she and her husband have been running for the last 14 years. She also talked about the "coffee with a cop" program where her shop is used by the Nevada City Police dept. to host casual conversations between members of the Police Dept. and citizens who may come in to discuss local issues face-to-face. Another unique aspect to her business , is that because of them opening the doors to customers at 6:30 am, they have some very unusual clientel, including some homeless folks who have become "regulars".  Of course there has been an occasional problem, but Rita feels that her environment is very safe. Ms.Fuenzalita also received several unsolicited testimonials from Rotarians praising the quality of the sandwiches on their menu.  Pictured is president Walt with Ms. Fiuenzalita.

Computer Lab Dedication at Bitney College Prep - Thursday Oct. 6

Several members of our club, including President Walt, Secretary Robin, and past President Dave, were on hand to join in the festivities.  Russ Jones, the Director of Bitney Prep displayed a plaque commemorating the event, which included a big thank you to both Nevada City Rotary and Grass Valley Rotary (along with 49er Rotary and District 5190) for contributing to refurbishing the lab.  The upgrade of the lab was inspired by our Club's Girls Who Code initiative.  Pictured from the left are Secretary Robin Milam, President Walt Stickel (with the hat), Director Russ Jones, and Grass Valley president Eric Trygg.

Membership Appreciation Celebration

Under development are plans to create a Membership Appreciation Celebration at our October 20 social mixer. Details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. If at all possible, please plan to attend.

Plans are also formulating for the March trip to Baja for our club members to support the clean water initiative at Las Barrilias. Watch the Rotario for details as they evolve.

An Opportunity to Support the NEO Youth Center in Grass Valley on Oct. 22

NEO is sponsoring its third annual Empire Challenge Run/Walk at the Empire Mine on October 22. The challenge includes either a 4 mile trail run or a two-mile walk as a fundraising event for the NEO youth center and its programs. President Walt is planning to do the 4 mile run and is hoping other Rotarians will join him in either category of this fundraising event. You may go to for details and applications.
