Notes From Last Meeting
pP Ben Barretta conducted last week's meeting with his usual professionalism and dry sense of humor. This two time president reminded us of some of the many accomplishments during his tenure: sponsorship of the Rotary 49er Breakfast Club, construction of the Deer Creek Miners Trail, introduction of ribs at the Fair booth, and the container shipped to Uganda filled to the brim, primarily with medical supplies. Thanks, Ben, for running an excellent meeting and for all that you have done as a Rotarian! P.S. Don't stop!

The program was presented by Howard Levine, former Executive Director of the Grass Valley downtown business association and newly elected city council member of Grass Valley. Howard is a painter and sculpture along with being the owner - with his wife Peggy - of the Swan-Levine House Bed and Breakfast and Art Gallery. Among other things, he shared his personal history of working with Osborne and Woods in conjunction with the AVM and other cultural projects and their impact on Grass Valley and Nevada City. He concluded with his vision for the future on the continuing impact of art and culture in Nevada County and an admonition to be open and welcoming to the young people in our area for they are the leaders of the future.

Guests were Marty Dinwiddie, Gil Dominguez and Luuk van den Berg. The raffle was won by Gil Dominguez, but was unsuccessful in the card match. Gary Gustafson was complimented on the Rotario and thanked for taking back the responsibility for its weekly publication.

Birthdays acknowledged were Carolyn Inglis, Judy Soldavini, Tom Coleman and Dennis Geare. Also celebrated with birthday cupcakes was Rotary International's 108th birthday which was on Saturday, February 23rd.

It was announced that there is a vacancy on the Club Foundation Board of Directors due to the resignation of Michael Colantuono. Anyone interested in learning more about the role or to be considered for election to the board should contact Dave Denney, Ellen Davis or Nicole Dillard.

Ellen Davis reminded everyone that lunch rates are $14 and $7 for non eaters, effective today.

President Elect Dennis Geare returned from PETS over the weekend and he was smiling. :)

Philemon Twebaze was a translator for the grant that we are undertaking with the Rotary Club of Kabale, Uganda.  Sol Henson and Tor Erickson, two local Nevada City residents, worked with Philemon to make significant progress at involving the Batwa in the completion of latrine building, spring protection and goat introduction.  Sol and Tor are sponsoring Philemon with scholarship money and he is now attending the Great Lakes  Regional College pursuing a degree in sanitation management.  Philemon is pictured above on the left.
