Dear Nevada City Rotarians and Friends

At our social on June 5 at Round Table Pizza we had a chance to hear from Jan Maes about Sierra Energy Reimagined (SERi). Jan grew up in Belgium and has a masters’ degree in agricultural business. He moved to Nevada County three years ago after working all around the world in sustainable agriculture and energy. SERi grew out of the Clean Power Cooperative. They seek to help people save money by saving energy. They provide opportunities for homeowners and business owners to understand their PG&E bills and strategize ways to save energy. They provide workshops for the community and advocate for clean energy. We learned a surprising thing: the 2020 wildfires in California, where 4 million acres burned, negated 14 years of greenhouse gas reduction efforts. June is Fellowship Month in Rotary International. As we wind down Rotary Year 24-25, I want to give a shout out to the wonderful Area-wide fellowship we have been able to have. Under the leadership of Area Governor, Marcia Salter, we had lots of fun times together.  First of all, it was my pleasure and delight for our Rotary Club of Nevada City to host the Foundation Roundup on March 16 at the Horsemen’s Lodge. Next, Big Congratulations to the Grass Valley Rotary Club who celebrated their 100 Year Anniversary on March 28 led by President Sean Jackson. On April 27 the 49er Rotary Club led by President Mary Ann Davis and coordinated with the City of Nevada City by John Paul, we had a chance to see a screening of the film, “Join or Die” at the Miners’ Foundry. Finally, we had a friendly game of trivia between our clubs hosted by Laura Armacher and the Grass Valley South Club on April 29 at the Alta Sierra Country Club. Who knew that Black Bart was the outlaw who held up stagecoaches throughout the Gold Country? I did and so did the winning 49er team!  I am already looking forward to next year’s events.

I may be a Duck (I do claim some degree of University of Oregon fandom) but I’m not lame yet. Next week in lieu of our lunch meeting we will have my demotion event. If you haven't RSVPd do so Now!

On Saturday, June 14, we have our next 3R: Recycle and Repurpose Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery event from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Dave’s Auto Repair on Zion Street by SPD.  Thank you, Dave and Stacy Robinson! Then, we’ll be back at Round Table on June 19 at 5:30 PM for PDG Dave Denny’s Magic Show. Rotary Rob is on record that he does NOT want to go back in the hat! I wonder what’s next for him.

Your President,

Louise

Lithium Ion Battery Recycle June 14 2025

Nevada City Rotary presents the Three "R" Event:  Recycle & Repurpose Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries

Coming June 14! Clean out your drawers and tool sheds. Our 4th annual Three “R” event to collect, recycle and repurpose rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and devices is rapidly approaching on Saturday, June 14. In partnership with Redwood Materials, we are hosting the collection from 10am-2pm at Dave’s Auto, 747 Zion St across from SPD in Nevada City.

The public can drop off Lithium-ion rechargeable devices and batteries for recycling by Redwood Materials. Materials and essential minerals from recycled batteries are used to make new rechargeable batteries. We will collect cellphones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, video game controllers, etc.

This is not an electronic e-waste event. Please only bring rechargeable devices and batteries identified on the flyer,
