On February 27 we learned so much from Leslie Lovejoy, Executive Director of Gold Country Senior Services. After a 51-year career in medicine as an RN with a Ph.D. in social psychology, Leslie moved here and joined the board of Gold County Senior Services. They were incorporated in 1976 and had services at the fairgrounds and then at the Nevada City Senior Apartments. In 2024 they moved in to the old Summer Thyme building at 231 Colfax Ave. They have 14 employees and 182 volunteers. They have nutritional services through Meals on Wheels 5 days per week and lunch at the center 3 times per week. They oversee the Senior Firewood Program where volunteers collect, split, stack and deliver firewood to low-income seniors who have wood as their only source of heat. A Pet Food Pantry serves 53 beloved companions to seniors. There are classes and events including exercise classes, technology, art, games and bingo. Membership is $50 per year per person or $75 for a couple. Anyone over 18 can support the center by becoming a member. You can see the menus, activities, and other programs on their Gold Country Services website. Thanks to Leslie for your ongoing dedication and support to our community.
Walt and I had a chance to serve our youth at the Area 4 Student Speechcontest on February 25. Walt was the timekeeper and I was the “teller” or scorekeeper. The student prompt was “How Have You or How Will You ‘work your magic’ in your own community in one or more of the seven areas that Rotary supports?” Toni took third place with her talk about her passion for maternal and childhood heath. She drew on her experiences with Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and her intention to become a nurse to help other children as she was helped.” Second place Emma is raising funds to help the homeless at Hospitality House. She’s asking for “just 5 bucks” with a goal of $1,000 in her community economic development project. First place was taken by Graham who spoke of sustainable agriculture as he and his family work to redevelop land that was destroyed by hydraulic mining. Graham will represent Area 4 in the District 5190 Speech Contest in Fallon, Nevada on May 3.
