The purpose of the RotaryGlobal Grant Scholarship is to foster international understanding through graduate study or research in a foreign university with a concentration in one or more of Rotary International’s Seven Areas of Focus. Our club’s Global Scholar, Evani Radiya-Dixit, chose the Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention focus.
At this Thursday’s meeting, we will hear about her research project on the current use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement in the United Kingdom and guidelines she’s developed for policy makers to make the technology fair to minority communities. Evani has become a living example of how Rotary can change lives with this opportunity for her to grow and give back to the world.
Hot off the press -- the August edition of Rotary Magazine has an article (p. 17) on the Astana Rotary Club, our Twin Club in Kazakhstan. It’s all about the club’s Inclusive Playground Project for children with and without disabilities. Learn all about the playground and how the Rotarians there got funding and made it such a hit. See it on our website Stories section and watch the video by the son of Lyazzat Alshinova, our friend and colleague in the story below. (Thanks to Robin & Chris for spotting this.)
Your Co-Presidents will be contacting you soon
To get the pulse of our club members, Carolyn and Chris will contact each of you and your spouse to just talk about the club, what’s satisfying to you and what isn’t. We will take you out to your favorite café and listen. It’s all on us. Expect a call over the next few weeks!
As a 2021 Rotary Global Grant Scholar, I spent nine months in the beautiful and quaint city of Cambridge, England, where a warm day felt like California in winter. There, I conducted research at the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge.
Over the past year, I have greatly enjoyed my time with the Grass Valley and Nevada City Rotary clubs. I cherish the inquisitive questions of members about my research and the tradition of happy/sad bucks! I also appreciate joining dinners with the Cambridge Sawston club and learning about members’ diverse life paths.
Congratulations Lyazzat and the Rotary Club of Astana, Kazakhstan
The August 2022 edition of Rotary Magazine includes story of the Club's Inclusive Playground Project!
The Rotary Club of Astana in late 2018 inaugurated its first inclusive playground in a country sorely in need of such opportunities. Named Kunshyaq, or “Sunshine,” the playground has specialized swings, ramps, merry-go-rounds, and other equipment to accommodate children with and without disabilities and instill values of tolerance and empathy. While the municipal council of the capital city, now called Nur-Sultan, donated the land, Rotary members in Astana, led by Past President Lyazzat Alshinova, generated about $55,000 from club members, other District 2430 clubs, embassies and other organizations, and proceeds from an art auction and ball. The playground is such a hit that the club, composed of Kazakhstanis and expatriates, raised funds for a second one in the capital.
Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at4:00pm via Zoom. Our next meeting will be August 8 at 4:00pm virtual via Zoom. Not a Board member but want to join us?
