Cattle Ranching in a Sustainable Manner
Tim Reid is Director of Pupil Services at Nevada Union High School. He has served as President of Nevada County Livestock Producers, the organization that helps organize the Junior Livestock Auction at the fair to support local youth in agriculture. Tim and his wife, Caitlin Oats were recognized as the 2021 Nevada County Fair Family of the Year for their unwavering support of the Fair and Draft Horse Classic.
Reid attended Chico State, majoring in agricultural business, where he was an active member of the National Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team and assumed leadership roles within the California Cattlemen's Young Cattlemen's Association. His internships at a large cattle ranch in Bridgeport, California, allowed him to gain hands-on experience with extensive cattle operations and network with prominent ranchers.
After college, Reid ventured into the produce industry in Salinas Valley. However, he soon returned to his roots, taking over his family's cattle operations and expanding the herd significantly. His partnership with another rancher has led to a thriving cattle business focused on sustainable year-round grazing.
Reid's educational career began in Esparto, where he connected with local farming families and later moved to Grass Valley, teaching at Bear River High School. His achievements in agricultural mechanics with the FFA organization are notable, including state and national titles. Additionally, he contributes as an adjunct professor of Agriculture Business and Economics at Sierra Community College.
Reid earned his administrative services credential, becoming an assistant principal at Nevada Union High School, specializing in intervention and special education. He advanced to the position of Director of Pupil Services, overseeing special education, nursing, and mental health programs. In March, he completed his doctorate in education.
Reid and his wife reside in Penn Valley, where they maintain an impressive equine setup and actively participate in cattle operations. Their home is a testament to their love for the agricultural lifestyle, complete with horses ranging from ranch workers to young prospects. His wife, a veterinary technician, shares his passion for horses and contributes to the ranch's operations. Despite their busy lives, they find balance and fulfillment in their work and their shared love of the land and animals.
