Holiday Goodwill

Coming up December 15 Nevada City Rotary will again be bellringing for the Salvation Army from 10am to 6pm at SPD Market in Nevada CIty.  Rotary across the US has a long tradition of ringing bells to raise money for the Salvation Army over the holidays.

We still have three out of five one hour shifts available for teams of two. 12-1, 1-2,  2-3,  4-5,  5-6. Two teams have signed up and are willing to do whatever shifts are needed. Now is the time to pick which shift works best for you. See President Tom this week to confirm your shift.

Last Week - A Fun Visit with DG Tina, Brian and Sparky

We sent DG Tina packing with a basket PLUS a tote filled with at least 8 bottles of local wines, wine glasses, coasters, openers, Grass Valley's own boutique distilled Vodka, bags of Nevada City's chocolate toffee delicacy's, local lore books and so much more!  Then we turned around and bought Jackson's basket for $1,520 with more still coming in!

The Jackson basket includes lots of wine, wine glasses, jewelry, chocolates, nuts and gift certificates for a one night at the National Hotel in Jackson, gift certificates for food and with merchants.  We will be raffling the elements at our Holiday Party.

At a fun filled meeting, DG Tina recognized Carolyn Feuille as our quiet Rotarian of the Year and Robin Milam as Club and District MVP.

On Friday Cathy Wilcox-Barnes led an incredible historical walking tour of Nevada City for DG Tina Spencer-Mulhern and Brian. The tour started at our own Miner's Trail and continued to Nevada City Winery and Firehouse #1 museum! We were amazed and reminded of Cathy's extensive knowledge of our community. Also a big thank you to Bill Jennings and Carla Burke for sharing the grape processing in the works at the winery!

Girls Who Code at Seven Hills

Girls Who Code Nevada County is launching its fourth year! Nancy Kemp shared stores of this years Club.  Please signup to serve as host and/or bring healthy snacks a week or more for Girls Who Code participants. If you’ve done it before you know all about it and if you haven’t, here is another incredible opportunity to become involved and participate with the youth in our community.  Please contact Nancy to sign up and support this very special program.

Nevada City Rotary to Sponsor 5 Students to NatureBridge

Given our Club’s relationship with Seven Hills School as host for Girls Who Code, John Wilson was approached by school facility about sponsoring students in their annual Seven Hills Nature Bridge Science Camp in January.  The Seven Hills 6th Grade Class has been participating in the 4-night, 5-day science camp in the Marin headlands for 25 years.  The staff recently learned that funding for the camp has been eliminated for this year. The school is reaching out to Rotary and other civic organizations for support to fund the program this year.  The intention is to send all 90 students to the camp at a cost of $440 per student.  While many students are able to self-fund, 35 students need sponsorships to cover camp expenses.  Nevada City Rotary is sponsoring 5 students.  John, Suzy and Chris are sponsoring additional students. If you are interesting in personally sponsoring at 7 Hills student, please see John Wilson.  The video shows what a wonderful program it is not only for students who attend the Marin County camp but other NatureBridge camps around the country.

Rotary Youth Exchange Student Host Families needed

The Rotary Club of Grass Valley is seeking host families for their foreign exchange student this school year. Our student this year is a delightful young lady from Switzerland.

Host families are being sought for 3-4 months each, so that our student can experience life in the US with different families as part of this cultural exchange. It's a wonderful opportunity for your family to be a part this life changing experience.

Interested families are asked to contact Marcia Salter at 530-913-5908  or email: nextpresident.gvrotary@gmail.com for more information.

The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is one of the largest student exchange groups, with connections in more than 100 countries and thousands of clubs reaching every continent.
