Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.
This week : Mixer with LeeAnn Brook - local artist and author
Contemporary landscape painter LeeAnn Brook grew up in the countryside of Glastonbury, Connecticut. She graduated from Paier College of Art near New Haven, Connecticut in 1973 with a double major in fine art and graphic design. Studying under the influences of trompe l’oeil painting master Ken Davies, her curriculum in art school was traditionally based. Concurrently, her personal work developed into large format contemporary paintings that she exhibited in shows and galleries throughout New York and New England, winning over 20 awards in juried shows in 3 years. At age 23, she was accepted into the prestigious Connecticut Society of Women Painters. She is a four-time award winner in the California State Fair and a four-time winner in the nationally recognized Wild & Scenic Film Festival’s juried art competition.
She published her first book “Points of Inspiration: An Artist’s Journey with Painting and Photography” in 2014, receiving over four national book awards. LeeAnn's Studio is at the corner of Pine St. and Spring St. in Nevada City.
Last week : Lunch Meeting with Holly Hermansen - Superintendent of Schools
Holly arrived at our meeting Thursday with spring in her step. She provided us with an enthusiastic presentation full of detail on the Junior Achievement process and how it has been integrated into the local public school system. It is a very well-defined process with lots of lesson plans and prearranged topics to engage young people in understanding processes in the outside world such as managing money, working as a team, and understanding very common everyday business situations. Junior Achievement is in its early stages here locally in the Nevada County schools, but has been utilized around the country in various forms for over 45 years. At the end of her presentation, Holly answered questions from the floor about the local schools and their current objectives. Holly also reminded us that she will be retiring next year after over 40 years of working in various educational capacities. And we did not need to be reminded that Holly is also an active member of the Nevada City Rotary 49er Breakfast Club. Holly is pictured with President Walt.
