Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.
This Week : Mixer - Craft Talk , featuring new member Tom Ryan
Tom was born and raised in Los Angeles. He has two daughters and two grandchildren. And all of his extended family live in Costa Rica. Growing up, Tom played in rock 'n roll bands continuously from age 14 to 24. From then on he played occasionally and just for fun. He put himself through college studying architecture and worked as a bookkeeper. After three years, he was tired of counting other people's money, and designing things for a class which he knew would never be built, so he took and passed the state contractors license exam. Tom then went on to work as a general contractor where he was able to design most of what he built. After 20 years, he opened a custom cabinet and furniture shop, and was also elected to the Board of Directors of a very small bank in Marina Del Ray. It turned out that all of the bank's directors were members of the local Rotary club. So he joined Rotary and since has had a great time putting "Service above Self ! Tom's hobbies include sailing, woodworking, dogs, and tinkering . Since joining our club, Tom has volunteered numerous times for various work assignments, as well as acting as our Sgt. of Arms during club meetings.
Last Week : Lunch with Steve Soloman - It was well-attended !
On Monday, Steven Solomon, Senior Annual Giving Officer - The Rotary Foundation, spoke from the heart about his extraordinary life and his gratitude for the many ways Rotary opened doors for him around the world working with Jane Goodall, Desmond Tutu, and so many others. Among numerous roles, Steven was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to South Africa. While the Grass Valley club hosted this lunch event, over 60 people from our 5 area clubs attended, including seven of our club members. Pictured are Steven and Wyn Spiller, Zone 25 Regional Foundation Coordinator It was a great meeting!
And speaking of The Rotary Foundation (TRF), if you haven't already made a contribution this year, we encourage each of our members to make a donation to the Foundation. Please know that a donation of any size is welcome and there are multiple ways to give. The Foundation started 100 years ago with a $26.50 donation. In celebration of The Rotary Foundation's Centennial year, we are encouraging every member to consider contributing at least $26.50. Our overall goal is to average a $100 donation per member. Also, several of our members are Bequest Society members who have included Rotary in their will or estate planning. Thank you for your consideration of this opportunity.
