Rotario - June 15, 2017

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.

Social This Week - Sonja Conklin of AirMedCare

Sonja Conklin is the Membership Manager for AirMedCare Network and enjoys sharing the lifesaving mission and cost saving membership program with residents, businesses and associations in the Sierra Foothills and Sacramento Valley.  AirMedCare Network is the membership provider for CALSTAR & REACH, your local air ambulance providers.

Sonja grew up in Placer County and enjoys spending time with her children and 1 year old grandson Ezra Jamison, supporting fundraising events, wine tasting, attending concerts and kayaking. She looks forward to sharing the important role air ambulances provide to meet the critical “golden hour”, and AirMedCare Network’s cost saving membership program.

The five Rotary Clubs of Area 4 are being grouped together to offer a discounted membership. For a number of members, CALSTAR memberships are expiring.  When you renew with AirMedCare, be sure to ask for the Western Nevada County Rotary discount !

Also This Week - Yard Sale This Saturday, June 17 !!

The BIG Rotary Yard Sale is this Saturday, June 17th, from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Dave's Auto Repair on the corner of Zion and Argall Way in Nevada City. We'll be sorting and pricing items at PE Cathy's house on Wednesday evening 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and again on Friday (and loading up the trucks Friday night, so join us if you can). We have a lot of really great items and we should get good traffic at our location. If you've signed up for a shift, THANKS and, if not, we can always use extra Rotarians (in RAW shirts) on Saturday either helping or buying. Tell your friends and neighbors to come on out to find some great bargains and support Nevada City Rotary's work in our community.

There will also be a Final  yard sale planning session on Thursday June 15 at 4:30pm  in the National, preceding our Mixer.

Last Week - Debbie McDonald from Hospitality House

Debbie provided our lunch group with a slideshow outlining some of the amazing work performed by Hospitality House. This 54-bed facility has provided temporary housing for almost 400 people over the past two years. Hospitality House would not be nearly as successful if it were not for its no-drugs policy. Debbie also provided anecdotes about some of the guests who were able to restart their lives by gaining training in retail and culinary services through their Culinary Job Training Program, which led to their employment, and eventual ability to be able to afford a place of their own. As part of the program, Debbie also provided a three minute video which was a personal testimonial of one of the former residents who was able to get back on his feet. Of course Hospitality House is always welcoming donations of clothing, other personal supplies, and volunteer services to assist in providing meals to the residence. Debbie and entire program was warmly received by our club members.

Booth Water Damage - update

Great News here!  Both the interior and exterior roof repairs are complete! We will have a "drywall painting party" on Wed. June 21 at the booth and will be followed-up with General Booth Cleanup on the weekend of July 29-30.  Stay tuned for more details.

In Other News

County Fair Update – Our planning has started for this year's Nevada County Fair which will be held August 9 through August 13. So naturally we continue to circulate the sign-up sheet for staffing all of the work shifts. We're hoping that each active member will help "Share the Load" and not only be able to staff at least two shifts per member, but also recruit friends and relatives for additional shifts. We now have 76 of the 100 slots filled, AND still need evening shift captains for most days. See the last schedule at 2017 Fair Schedule. You can access, but not update the shift schedule at the Club web site. Please Email updates to Pres. Walt or Sect. Robin.

June 28 - Walt's Demotion Party  Judy Soldavini and hubby George Roberts are once again hosting this year's Demotion Party at their beautiful Bridge House on Wednesday June 28.  Celebration begins at 5:30pm with dinner and program at 6:30pm. The cost will be $35/person. Please note, we will also need a setup crew for tables and chairs late morning around 10:30am. Please sign up with Dave Bunje if you have not already done so! It will be another fun event celebrating our year and President Walt.

Temporary Leadership opportunities in the Near Future

Some of our key Board members will be traveling during the summer and the Club needs members to assist in filling some leadership gaps during those periods.  Pres. Walt will be traveling this Summer, and  Pres. Elect Cathy will be out of the area for 2 months this Summer. Both are arranging for coverage of weekly meetings, managing the fair booth schedule, and work parties during their absence.  So far, Tom Ryan has offered to fill in for President Cathy for a month.  Robin will coordinate publication of the Rotario and the Fair work party on July 29.  Robin has submitted an authorization to the Fair for our annual pre-fair picnic targeted for August 3.  Also, Carolyn Feuille, our International Chair will be also traveling much of this Summer.
