Merchant Mixer with Sierra Jazz Society

Sierra Jazz Society's mission is to pass on the uniquely American tradition of jazz with the highest musical standards. They believe Music and the Arts are the heart of life. Bill Douglass has been performing and recording since 1965 with world-renowned talents such as Marian McPartland, Bobby McFerrin, Mose Alison, Terry Riley, Art Lande, Mark Isham, Bobby Bradford, and Tom Waits. Tumble, Bill's current collaboration, is on the cutting edge of jazz, combining elements of world music, many styles of jazz and an eclectic mix.

Nora Nausbaum was trained as a classical flutist.  Nora received her Masters of Music degree from New England Conservatory of Music, taught in colleges in the Midwest and South before coming to California in 1985.  Bill and Nora also play with The Sierra 3 with Nora on alto flute, Bill on bass and John Girton on guitar.

All three musicians are part of Sierra Jazz Camp faculty, along with 4 other musicians. Sierra Jazz Camp is in its 16th year and accepts all levels, all instruments, voice and all ages.  Camp this year is July 19-23 at the Nevada City School of the Arts.

Last Week - Capped the Year for President Walt

We had lots of laughs, jokes, puns, groans and more than a few hats capping the year at Walt's demotion.

In honor of Sandy's contributions with our Club and behind the scenes, Nevada City Rotary President Cathy was proud to present Sandy with her first Paul Harris Fellow Award.  Thank you Walt, Sandy and all our Club for a year of fun and service!  Here's to the coming year with Cathy!

Children's Festival

On Friday, July 21st, 2017, The Children's Festival will return to Pioneer Park in Nevada City. For one special day each year, Pioneer Park in Nevada City park is transformed into a magical wonderland with over twenty arts and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, jugglers, face-painters, a bridge-guarding troll, a bevy of faeries, Pepper the Witch, medieval fencing, spinning demonstrations, Queen Elizabeth and her court, Pyrate Skool, and Claude, the life-sized mechanical dragon.

There will be two sessions: from 9am - noon and from 5pm - 8pm. Admission to each session is $3. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. And we are still looking for two additional volunteers to staff the "Solar Art" station from 9 to 12. Contact Nancy Kemp for details.

A big Thank You to Nancy Kemp, Gayle Denney and Sandy Stickel for your year round preparation.  Volunteers are needed to support the Solar Art for the morning session and possibly other activities.  It is lots of fun!  Please contact Nancy, Gayle or Sandy if you are available. County Fair Update & Save the Dates:

Saturday July 29     Booth Clean up
Thursday August 3  Pre-Fair Picnic   5:30pm on Treat Street.  Bring a dessert or salad.  And you will get your Fair tickets!
Wed Aug 9 - Sun Aug 13  Sea You at the Fair!!!

This year's Nevada County Fair which will be held August 9 through August 13. So naturally we continue to circulate the sign-up sheet for staffing all of the work shifts. We're hoping that each active member will help "Share the Load" and not only be able to staff at least two shifts per member, but also recruit friends and relatives for additional shifts. We now have 76 of the 100 slots filled, AND still need evening shift captains for most days. And we still have a HUGE HOLE ON FRIDAY -- HELP!!! See the last schedule at 2017 Fair Schedule. You can access, but not update the shift schedule at the Club web site. Please Email updates to Pres. Walt or Sect. Robin.

Temporary Leadership Opportunities in the Immediate Future

Some of our key Board members will be traveling during the summer and the Club needs members to assist in filling some leadership gaps during those periods. Pres.Cathy will be out of the area for 2 months this Summer. PP Walt will be traveling this Summer. Both are arranging for coverage of weekly meetings, managing the fair booth schedule, and work parties during their absence.  So far, Tom Ryan has offered to fill in for President Cathy for a month.  Robin will coordinate publication of the Rotario and the Fair work party on July 29.  Also, Carolyn Feuille, our International Chair will be also traveling much of this Summer.
