Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.
This Week: Jesse Locks - Director of Nevada City Film Festival
Born and raised in Nevada City, Jesse graduated from Nevada Union High School and then went to UC Santa Cruz, where she earned a degree in literature and journalism. She worked in publishing, writing for action sports and music magazines, before returning to her native Nevada City in 2007. While away, Jesse formed the Locks Media Group, a boutique marketing & PR firm. “I was gone for 10 years,” she said. “I missed my family and the natural setting of our city. There’s something special about the Sierra.”
Upon her return, Locks began working with several local nonprofit organizations, helping them with marketing and public relations and introducing many to the effective use of social media. She teamed up with two high school friends who had started the Nevada City Film Festival (NCFF), and has served as Director of the growing festival for the past six years.
The NCFF still retains the charm of it’s freewheeling, small-town roots but it has since blown up into a major attraction in the Sierra foothills. Highlights of recent years such as filmmaker spotlights on Mike Mills (Thumbsucker, The Beginners, etc), multimedia performance artist Miwa Matreyek, Jonathan Krisel (Director of Portlandia) and Don Hertzfeld (Everything Will be OK, Rejected). These creative film makers have landed NCFF on the map in the indie fest world as one of of the most innovative, fun and artist-friendly events in the country.
Last Week: Steve Hillis, Owner of Mountain Pastimes Toy Store
Steve Hillis and his wife, Tammy came to our mixer not realizing that Steve was expected to give us a 20-30 minute oral presentation about his personal history as well as his long affiliation with Mountain Pastimes Toy Store. And Steve rose to the occasion! He provided us an account of meeting his future wife at Chico State, as well as his experiences teaching middle school in Honduras. Steve also talked about his days as a teenager in Nevada City and working for his dad at Mountain Pastimes. You could almost feel his energy as Steve spoke about the toy store and some of its most popular products, including the necklace made of Christmas lights, and his most popular item this Christmas, which was a miniature indoor drone. There is no doubt that Steve is passionate about his business.
