Rotario - August 29, 2019

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

August 29 2019 - 5th Thursday

We are DARK - No Meeting This Week

A Great Welcome for DG Randy Van Tassell

DG Randy Van Tassell’s visit to our Club last week was a big success. All of you really made him feel welcomed and showed him true Rotarian hospitality. My thanks go to all the Board members for being so well prepared and conveying to Randy what a dynamic club we have. He and our AG Anita were surprised by how much we are doing and the fun that we have doing it.

DG Randy gave a heart-felt talk about his involvement in Rotary, what our RI President Mark Daniel Maloney’s vision is and where we fit in as a club. Randy's symbol for the relationship of the Clubs and District is a tandem bicycle - with the District on the back peddling to add power to the direction the Club wants to go. He reminded us that we are steering the bike and setting our course – the District is behind us helping us get there.

Ken Ching was presented with the Quiet Rotarian award and it was well deserved. He is always behind the scenes doing the quiet little jobs that no one notices. The Making a Difference award will be presented at a future date. It is no longer a secret that Michael Young is to be the recipient. Michael created the vision for our fabulous Hungry Games event and certainly Makes a Difference in our club.  We’ll celebrate him at a future meeting.

Heartfelt Condolences to Michael Young and Family

Our deepest condolences go out to Michael and his family. We received heartbreaking news on Wednesday that his wife Karen suddenly passed away. Please keep him in your prayers. Karen was a sweet woman with a gentle soul and so talented. She will be really missed by everyone.

Special RYLA Thank You from Alex Macarty

Nevada CIty Rotary was especially pleased to sponsor Alex Macarty as the first student from Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL)to attend RYLA this summer. At our pre-fair picnic, we had the privilege of hearing Alex share about her profound her RYLA experience. Her mother Carol was also at the picnic and expressed her gratitude. Attached is a handwritten letter from Alex which opens with "You have changed my life, and for that I cannot thank you enough. This journey of growth has held such an important impact on who I am as a leader, friend and community member..."  I encourage you to take a minute and read her letter yourself.

Alex and her mother are also planning to attend the Interact Leadership Training in Reno that will run parallel with AOS on September 28.

Avenues of Service - District 5190 Training September 28

On September 28, 2019 you will have another opportunity to learn about Rotary and where you might want to use your valuable talents. Cathy is envisioning 3 carloads of Nevada City Rotarians at Avenues of Service (AOS)A Day of Learning for all Rotary Members. Some fantastic sessions are planned with knowledgeable presenters. Both Robin and Pp and PAG Dennis Geare will lead sessions along with many more on the program so you know they’ll be educational (and fun).

The cost is $20.00 and includes a Continental breakfast and lunch AND the Club pays for it so the cost to you is zero! Cathy needs 2-3 more Sargent of Arms for the day so, if you are interested in helping, please let her know. To register, click https://tinyurl.com/AOS-2019 or the flyer image.
