Rotary gOSSIP cORNER
by Dixie

Our youngest Rotarian ... no, not David Kenitzer ... Colin Stewart recently turned 1 years old and was quoted at his birthday party as asking for a baby sister. After Kim fainted, the party resumed with merrymaking and cake...
Rotarian Jack Dinwiddie was one of the big winners at John Hensley's 25th annual Poker Extravaganza at John and Sandra's lake house. The "first couple" of Recreation Realty have been renovating the lake house and expect to have a pontoon party boat moored out front within a week or so...
Jeff Wenzel and his wife, Lynn, have recently become grandparents -- little Griffin is a cutie and has already made a few treks to Nevada County from his home in the Bay Area. Word is Jeff won't be retiring soon because Lynn has developed "Grandma's Elbow," a disease caused by whipping out a credit card every time she see cute baby clothes for sale...
pP Ben Barretta -- who was fined $50 at last week's meeting -- is considering a return to NID if Rotary is going to cost him $60 a week...
Phil Ruble and wife Mimi will be spending Thanksgiving in Hawaii. Lucky them...
Guess who George "Filibuster" Rebane recently had to his house for lunch? The subject was numeracy, and the visitor was a prominent member of the community...
Ask Eric Trygg about his recently-departed chicken who greeted all visitors and had tons of personality. I'm not making this up!

Club News

New Members Proposed: Jarrett Anderson (Real Estate), Randy Young (Floor Covering), and Brent Daggett (Architect) are being proposed as new members to our club. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these potential members, please talk to President Fultz or the Membership Chairman.
Fair Booth: The Nevada County Fair will be going from Aug 10 - 14, and of course, we'll be staffing our food booth again this year. pP Ben will be passing around the sign-up sheet for the fair booth shifts. Be sure to sign-up now, so you can get the shifts that will work for your busy schedules.
New Fining Policy: Prez Fultzee is raising the budget for club fines from $500 to $2,500. Using the extra $2,000 raised during the year, the Board of Directors will be awarding a member $200 towards their Paul Harris each month. If you have nominations for a member putting "Service Above Self", please let Prez Fultz or a Board Member know before next month's board meeting.
Board Meetings Changed: The Board Meetings will now be held at 5:30 pm every 1st Monday of the month at John Woodford's office on Litton Drive. Our next Board Meeting will be held on Aug 1. All members are invited to attend.
Be Sure to Turn Off Your Cell Phones: If your cell phone rings during the meeting, you will be charged $10. If it goes off during the speaker's presentation, you will be charged $50.
Last Week's Donations: The club donated $500 to the Children of Chernobyl project, while George Rebane personally donated another $500. With this $1,000, one child can be brought to the US for a homestay away from the low-level radiation still infesting that area. Music in the Mountains received $500 for its Young Musicians Competition, which gives scholarships to its finalists. $500 went to the Celebration of Life Triathlon and $250 went to Sierra Services for the Blind ... both for their work in our community.
Last Week's Attendance: Only six members need to make up by July 21 for our club to have a
100% day and cost our esteemed leader $100. They are (yep, we're naming names!): Dave Fluke, Dave Denney, Harvey Diemer, Kim Stewart, Ellen Davis and Ralph Sawvell. Remember, attendance doesn't cost ... it pays! Every 100% day will add $100 to our fine coffers by Prez Fultzee and eliminate the need to fine you.

The Crown's Corner
by Fultzee

It should be obvious to each of you in attendance last week that I intend to have fun this year....and I hope each of you will have fun as well. While the goals of Rotary are serious and important to our planet, we should never forget that the need for fellowship and friendship was the reason that four lonely businessmen in Chicago started meeting over 100 years ago.

Serf Ruble showed the proper respect to the throne last week. While not necessary to approach on your knees every time you address me, it might lighten your fine burden. Speaking of which, while I have set a minimum goal of extracting $2,500 from the membership this year, not all fines will be equal. Please let me know your limit, and I will respect it. And remember, each month the board will award to a non-board member a $200 Sustaining Paul Harris in recognition for club service in the preceding month.

If I had a sword, I would have knighted Squire Rebane last week for his impromptu and generous donation of $500 to the Children of Chernobyl project. What means to those of you not at last week's meeting, is that next year instead of the club sponsoring half a child for $500, we can bring the entire child to Nevada County for their respite from their contaminated environment.

Please mark August 4th on your calenders today. That evening we will have our first family social at the fair booth (we will be dark that afternoon). Since pP Ben B. is now unemployed (some say unemployable), I have named him "Booth Chairman for Life". It is not to early to be thinking about how many shifts you can pull at the booth during the fair.

In closing, I was telling one of our members last week about how Thomas Edison used to call a press conference every time he had an idea for a new invention.....and then he would go into his lab to perfect it. I am following the same philosophy by announcing that our club intends to win every club award at The Distinct Conference next year. Thanks to the excellent work of my predecessors, the Nevada City Rotary Club can reach this goal with just a little extra effort.

You have all seen our new bulletin by David "Kidd" K. It is on its way to the winner's circle. Don't forget to send gossip to Dixie R. Contributors to her column will be exempt from fines for at least a week. Wait until you see our new web page by Gary G. Since we have the most talented Webmaster in district 5190....it stands to reason that we will have the best web page. Our gifted sign maker Ed T. is already thinking about our club display for the District Assembly and Conference. Maybe we could even get some of it ready for the D.G. Dave's visit on September 22nd. Our club has a lot to boast about ... lets put it all on display!

Etc...Etc you get the idea. Winning the Attendance, New Member and Foundation giving awards will be up to each of us. We can make Nevada City Rotary an example in the district this year. We have a great legacy to build on.

E-mail me with any of your suggestions, gripes and ideas: fultzee@sbcglobal.net. Don't forget to send me your fine limit for the year as well.
