Dear Rotarians and Friends,

The Station at Northern Queen Hotel
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City
Faith Tannenbaum, NU Interact Fullfilling a Dream with Project Amigo
As a current member and leader of the Nevada Union Interact Club I am organizing a Project Amigo work-away service trip in March. Attending a Project Amigo service trip has been a dream of mine since I joined Interact in my freshman year, learned about Rotary’s impact in the village of Cofradía de Suchitlán, and found my passion for humanitarian aid work. Currently, I am planning to take 6 other students on this trip as part of my senior project before I graduate. We want to present in hopes of sharing our work as a Club, passion for Project Amigo, and fundraising for trip expenses. -- Faith
Project Amigo [3] supports students from Colima, Mexico so that they can create their own educational opportunities and better their quality of life. To do this, we remove the financial barriers to education through scholarships that include school fees, transportation, uniforms and school supplies, and a hot lunch. Our staff also provide tutoring and mentoring during Project Amigo Homework Club. Homework Clubs also provide us with a way of keeping in close touch with the students so we can identify problems before they become so severe that the student is forced to drop out of school.
We also provide opportunities for volunteers from other countries to do valuable humanitarian service that creates and fosters friendship and understanding across cultures.
Education and literacy are powerful tools to create a brighter future for the world’s children who in turn benefit the nations they live in. Since 1984, Project Amigo has worked with rural youth in Mexico to continue their formal schooling including university level. Project Amigo became a U.S. 501c3 non-profit charity in 1996, providing educational scholarships, material support, enrichment activities, and health care to disadvantaged youth in the state of Colima, Mexico.
Project Amigo's Board is made up almost entirely of Rotarians, and the Executive Director is a long-time Rotarian.
reCONNECTing
It has been a real pleasure to see some familiar faces back among us again. Long-time club member David Fluke is feeling well enough to join us again. What a delight to see his smiling face at last Thursday’s meeting. Also, several weeks ago, former member Bonnie Hawthorne joined us for an evening mixer. Now that she’s “retired” again (but not from Trophies Anyone?) we’re hoping she’ll be able to reCONNECT with the club – don’t you have to love how I worked our theme in there instead of just saying join our club again?
Hungry Games II, here we come!
In less than two weeks we’ll be pulling out all the stops for our Hungry Games, the Second Course. Michael and his team have been hard at work making sure it will be even more successful than last year’s debut. This year we will have several special “live” auction items including a 10-day stay in Chris and Christina Geyer’s wonderful casita in Los Barriles, Mexico. We also have an airplane flight over beautiful Nevada County and a special underground tour for 10 of the Sixteen to One Mine - the last working hard rock mine in this area. In addition to these fabulous items there will be a silent auction, delicious food and wine tastings and an opportunity to dance the night away to the sounds of Sgt. Funky. The grand finale will be the drawing for the $1,200 Winner Takes All Raffle for twelve $100.00 certificates to top local restaurants. You won’t want to miss it and neither will your friends so make sure you pick up some tickets from Robin and sell, sell, sell.
Mystery Picture
Can anyone identify this picture? Over the next two months I will be putting pictures in the Rotario of places, objects or whatever in and around Nevada City for you to try to identify. Try to answer as many as possible BUT keep it to yourself! On May 7th you will find out the answers – person with the most correct just might win something!
Members Corner: Off to PETS ...
Both Tom Milam as our PE and PP/PAG Dennis as Sergeant At Arms are headed to FarWest PETS for the weekend. RI President-elect Holger Knaack's theme for 2020-21 is Rotary Opens Opportunities. Tom and fellow PEs will be creating opportunities to strengthen their leadership, help put service ideas into action, and improve the lives of those in need.
