Staying Connected - October 14 2021

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday October 14, 2021 - 12:15 Lunch
with Jennifer Singer ~ Bright Futures For Youth

Zoom continues - Same ZOOM link works.
Watch this space for further updates!!!

Many thanks to the attendees of our last Thursday evenings, “What’s Your Story”, social.  It was a great success.  Those who tuned in got a little peak into some personal history from those who shared and I have heard from many since the meeting that it made them feel closer and more connected to their fellow members.  Isn’t that what a social should be all about?

I shared some pictures and memories of a passion for sail boats, decorating them for parades and sharing the fun with my former Rotary Club. Co-Pres Dave shared some pictures demonstrating his diving skills in high school and college while on the diving team and under the tutorage of his diving coach, an Olympic champion.  While still in junior high school, Gayle’s ticket was pulled from a department store raffle and won a four-year scholarship to Northwestern Nebraska.  Despite being mathematically challenged in school, Nancy told how she amazed her friends and family by overcoming and rising through the ranks of corporate banking to the level of VP at B of A.  Walt shared three life changing moments, including how he met Sandy.  Who knew that Robin made numerous trips to the Upper Amazon jungles of Ecuador to integrate with an isolated indigenous tribe.  Lynda gave us some insight on her time spent with the Masai in Africa.  Cathy shared a slice of her many talents by reading two of her incredibly moving poems.

These small slice of life experiences opened our eyes to the wealth of knowledge and talent within our club and has opened the doors to many conversations to come.  There is no doubt that we will be doing this again in the near future so if you didn’t get in to share this time give some thought to what you can add to the next round.

We were also delighted to welcome a special guest visitor, Megan, to our meeting who has expressed her interest and appreciation for who we are and what we do.  You will undoubtably being hearing more about her and have the opportunity to meet and greet with her at upcoming meetings.

Don’t miss this week’s 12:15 zoom meeting with speaker Jenn Singer on “Bright Futures for Youth”.  Jennifer helped co-found The Friendship Club in 1995, and became Executive Director in 2004.  The Friendship Club merged with NEO (New Events and Opportunities) in September 2020, and was renamed Bright Futures for Youth. Also, Environmental Sustainability Chair Chris, will be rolling out a new ES project that we all can take part in.

At last night’s board meeting it was decided that every effort will be made to have a live meeting at the Litton Building on November 4th for our visit with Governor Anita.  Hopefully those details will be sorted out and confirmed at our next meeting.

As always, thanks for the honor and privilege of hanging out and working with such great club members and providing a little space here to share the gratitude.

Join the Rotary Plant-Rich Diet Challenge
Now through October 15, 2021

The 15-day Rotary Plant Rich Diet Challenge continues through this week. A number of us are discovering new foods and recipes!  For more information visit the Plant-Rich Diet Challenge.

The Environmental Sustainability Committee has arranged a partnership with Save Mart in Fowler Center for a collection point for our plastics recycling project.  Our Club is connecting with local merchants and the County to place plastic recycling boxes around the area so customers and Rotarians can recycle clean stretchable plastics including all sorts of bags:  grocery, bread, ice, produce, cereal, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning, ziplocks, bubble wrap, pallet wrap, stretch film and more. No bottles or plastic boxes.

We need additional Rotarians to participate in placing and monitoring the collection boxes.  Contact Chris (ES Committee Chair), Nancy, Cathy, Judy or Robin if you want to actively participate in cleaning our community and recycling plastics that Waste Management will not collect.  Save Mart will deliver the plastics we collect to Trex would will convert them in to Trex deck boards and building materials.  How many of you have trex decks, railings or flooring?
