Here we are into the month of November!
The way I know it’s November is that we just drove through Nevada City on Sunday in order to see hundreds of people out in Halloween costumes, and most of them seemed to be on East Broad Street. Those residents must take out a second mortgage to afford the candy they give out!
A big piece of news for Nevada City Rotary is that we are resuming hybrid meetings, in our meeting space at the Litton Building for in-person attendance. With the club’s recent purchase of new tech equipment, an even better hybrid experience should be facilitated for those who need to stay home and Zoom in. Thanks to Tom Milam who makes sure that the tech set up happens before and runs during each meeting and always to Robin who helps keep things flowing smoothly for all of us during the meeting.
To help celebrate our first hybrid meeting for quite a while will be a visit from our District Governor Anita Daniels. The yearly visit to our club from the District Governor is a great chance to find out what is going on in District 5190 and to hear news of Rotary International. Anita has already visited clubs all over Northern California and Northern Nevada, and her husband Don has been her right-hand man. We look forward to hosting them both at our Thursday night meeting.
Anita grew up in Nevada County and had a long career in local banking. In 2017, she retired and began devoting herself to Rotary full time. Prior to that, she had served in many local volunteer capacities and has been honored often for her civic engagement. She is an enthusiastic Grass Valley Club Rotarian, and we are fortunate to have “a local” as our governor this year.
Her daughter Kris Stepanian is also a GV Rotarian and a wonderful local singing talent. In fact, when I was district governor back in 2001-2002, Kris serenaded me at our district conference with that breathy/Marilyn Monroe version of “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.”
“If I invite
A boy some night
To dine on my fine Finnan haddie,
I just adore
His asking for more,
But my heart belongs to daddy.”
You can see that I have some fond memories of my governor year, and I know that Anita and Don have been accumulating theirs, too. We look forward to adding to them on Thursday night!
Bring your Stretchable Plastics for Recycling This Week!
As we announced last month, our Environmental Sustainability Committee has arranged a partnership with Save Mart in Fowler Center as a collection point for our plastics recycling project. Bins are already at Briar Patch and Habitat's Restore with more in the works. We are launching our plastics recycling Club collection at this week's meeting. To kick off our project, bring any stretchable plastics you have that are clean and fit into one of the following criteria: grocery, bread, ice, produce, cereal, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning, zip locks, bubble wrap, pallet wrap, stretch film and more. NO bottles or plastic boxes. If it stretches, bring it. If it crunches or crackels, find another outlet!
