Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Computer Renewal in Palestine - "Computers for Students"
with Merrill Glustrom, Rotary Club of Boulder

Merrill Glustrom, Rotary Club of Boulder, is spearheading a project to renew computers and donate them to low-income schools and families in poverty in the West Bank.  As Co-Chair Environmental Sustainability Committee for Boulder Rotary Club,  Merrill visited the West Bank with the Boulder nonprofit Sustainable Israeli Palestinian Projects (sipprojects.org) shortly before the COVID pandemic hit. He will speak about the Computer Renewal in Palestine project as well as the health and environmental crisis related to electronic burns in the region.

Join us at our Thursday evening social for a discussion with Merrill.

Area 4 Applying for District Grant for Nevada Joint Union High School District (NJUHSD)

Our Club has been invited to join the Clubs in Area 4 to participate in a District Grant benefitting the Nevada Joint Union High School District (NJUHSD).  This District Grant is intended to fund the cost of the Architectural Plans for the 86-Acre Phelan Ranch that has just been donated to NJUHSD for Career Technical Education and for Agricultural Program classes and facilities. Our Club has a long history of supporting the youth in our community who are members of 4H or FFA.  This new campus will benefit the young people who are participating in the local Ag Programs.

We are looking forward to seeing the development of this facility and to working on other projects as the facility evolves.  Read more about the Phelan Ranch project from Brett W. McFadden: An incredible opportunity for students, The Union, 2-24-2021

Food Bank of Nevada County - Fresh Produce Project

Our District Grant to provide fresh produce from local farms to the Food Bank of Nevada County has been funded and will be completed in June.  Susie is coordinating with Nicole McNeely to schedule one or more work days as part of the Grant.  We will publish the details of the work day as soon as we know them.

Rotary International Global Grant Scholarship

As a project for next Rotary year, we are preparing a Global Grant Scholarship application to sponsor Evani Radia-Dixit to attend the Oxford Internet Institute as a graduate-level researcher working on facial recognition technology.  Her research will address Rotary's focus area of peace-building and conflict resolution.

If the Global Grant is approved, Nevada City Rotary will be the lead Club with Grass Valley Rotary as co-sponsor. Each of the two clubs would fund $1,000 for scholarship funds.  District will pay $15,000 which the TRF will match at $15,000.  A Rotary Club in Oxford England needs to participate as a local host Club.  Tom Ryan, Doug McDonald, and Carolyn Feuille participated in a meet and greet zoom call with Evani this last week and were very impressed. Stay tuned for more details as the Grant application process proceeds.

Shout-out to Club members:

  • John Hensley for a generous personal donation to our sister Rotary Club in Los Barriles
  • John and Susie Monary-Wilson for their intent to sponsor a young student in Tanzania
  • Paul Boch and Robin Milam for achieving Paul Harris +2!  Paul and Robin were awarded their PHF+2 pins during our Penzance Park work day on Monday

Penzance Park work day

An energetic crew met at Penzance Park in Nevada City on Monday morning to do some maintenance and clean-up.  Thanks to everybody that came out for the work day.  The park now looks neat and clean!  It was a great opportunity to get together with fellow Club members, to do some community service, and to enjoy Cathy’s yummy cookies (thanks again, Cathy!).

A fun filled thanks go to John and Susie, Tom Ryan, Cathy, Paul, Carolyn Feuille, Chris, Lynda, Robin and Prez Tom!

Nevada County Vaccine Clinics need Volunteers

We have two opportunities to serve our community as the effort to get COVID immunizations to everybody in the County is moving forward.

1)  We partnered with Nevada County Public Health for the Flu Clinic last Fall and volunteered to support COVID clinics when needed.:

Our Nevada County Public Health Vaccine Clinic at Whispering Pines has extended a request for volunteers this month:

  • Friendly personalities needed to be clinic “Patient Runners”
  • Four hour shifts either 8:30-12:30 or 12:30-4:30, Monday-Friday
  • Walking many miles a day within our clinic building escorting patients from registration to exam room
  • Vaccinated individuals preferred (we can vaccinate them if necessary)
  • Registration in DHV required
  • Start date as soon as possible

If you are interested please contact, Donna Tully, at 707-933-6664.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support of Public Health!!

Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

2) Doug McDonald also serves on the Board of Western Sierra Medical Clinic (WSMC) along with other Area 4 & 5 Rotarians.  They are looking for volunteers on May 22 and June 5 at the new clinic on Old Tunnel Road off Brunswick in Grass Valley.  Contact Doug if you are interested and available for one of those dates.

Your Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!

Thank you Treasurer Tom Ryan for your ongoing diligence with our finances.  And thank you Club members for following the Four Way Test with your pledges to our Club!  If you have questions, Tom R is happy to discuss your statement with you.

Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary.  They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom.  Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.  Thanks for sharing you!
