Staying Connected June 9 2022

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday June 9 - 12:15pm
Leo Granucci and Katherine Doolittle:

Nevada County Home Path - Program for Homelessness

Hybrid - In Person at Litton Engineering
200 Litton Drive, Grass Valley, CA

Ask and receive!

Our co-prez Tom had quite a story to tell last week to Rotarians in the room. After mentioning the success of our garage sale—everyone in the room had been at the sale—he said that working with Walt, a deposit of $3400 had gone into the club’s bank account. Wait a minute, we all thought. We knew we had made $1800 at the garage sale. Tom went on to say that working with Britney, etc. we had almost doubled our proceeds. Who is Britney?! Turns out that Tom and Walt communicated with Tall Pines Nursery to whom we turned over our fair booth and that they had agreed to buy our miscellaneous equipment for $1600. That by asking, we received! What a success story!

So what else haven’t we asked for? Well, because of COVID, we didn’t do our usual asking—for friends to buy Hungry Games tickets. For people we know to have coffee and talk about joining our Rotary club. Even though Nevada County still has COVID cases, things are looking up. We are meeting in person again. So it won’t be long before we should be thinking about who we know whom we should ask to tell about our Rotary club. Maybe we should ask members of the club to come up with more program ideas, to share the burden of that responsibility. We did ask that members pay their Happy/Sad Buck monthly, without being sent a bill.

And our treasurer, Tom, just asked that we pay our dues by June 30 and perhaps consider an additional donation. I’m sure we’ll all get our checks in the mail so that he doesn’t have to ask again.

Sometimes asking doesn’t have the results we hope for, as people weigh what they can and cannot do. But if we don’t ask, we won’t know. I asked Gayle on Saturday—because it was a cool weekend—if we could have Navy Bean soup Sunday night, and she said no because the beans must be soaked overnight, and it was too late for that.  Undeterred, I asked if lamb shanks were a possibility. Voila, if I would go to the store and get the ingredients, the answer was yes. Of course, then Gayle asked if I would do something I’d been putting off on my To Do list, so what could I say but yes.

Our speaker this week may ask what we know about homelessness. And maybe we’ll learn about what some people are doing because someone asked.

CoP Dave (and Tom)

Demotion Here We Come!

It is time to once again pass the scepters!  We do know how to party and our Demotion Parties are always fun and filled with laughter!  It would be a great time to introduce a friend to Rotary and our Club!

If you have not signed up, please contact Cathy!  Please RSVP by June 9 if you have not already done so!  We need to give a headcount to our award winning chef Jason at The Ham Stand by Thursday. Program This Week - Nevada County Home Path

Nevada County Home Path is a group of local individuals passionately committed to the well-being of our unsheltered neighbors. Katherine Doolittle and Leo Granucci will present the Home Path vision for a thoughtful and effective plan that will provide safety for our chronically homeless people who are still sleeping on our streets and in the woods.  They seek the endorsement of our community for the establishment of a resource center and a transitional camp that will provide a compassionate and effective approach to help our homeless neighbors and which will provide long-term benefits for our entire community.

Katherine Doolittle serves as Outreach Director for Home Path. She has more than 25 years experience with non-profits, community outreach, strategic planning, board development and public education. A 15-year Nevada City resident, Katherine has been involved locally with One Source-Empowering Carergivers, 4 Elements Earth Education, Sierra Harvest, Nevada City Farmers Market and Unity in the Gold Country.

Board member Leo Granucci is a 22-year Nevada County resident and a retired sales and marketing expert. He has served on the boards of The Friendship Club, Center for the Arts, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Hospice of the Foothills, Hospitality House, Nevada County Airport Commission, and Dignity Health Corporation’s Finance Committee. Leo is also a member of Angel Flight as a pilot, a non-profit that flies patients for medical treatment.

Your Dues and Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!

2022-2023 DUES INVOICES have been sent! Check your email for annual dues invoices from Treasurer Tom.  As we prepare to start a new Rotary year, annual dues invoices are due by July 1.  Tom reminds us that a good time to make an annual contribution is with your dues.  If for some reason you haven't seen an invoice, let Tom know!

Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary.  They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom.  Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.

REMINDER - Please send in your Happy Sad/Bucks

You will not be billed for your Happy Sad/Bucks pledges.  We ask that you track your own pledges and submit your payment at the end of each month.  Here is a Happy/Sad Bucks tracking form you can download and use to track your pledges.   As always, payments go to Nevada City Rotary, PO Box 74, Nevada City, CA 95

Thanks for sharing you and for following the Four Way Test with your Happy Buck pledges to our Club!

Recycling bins around town
