Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Join us this Week on Zoom
Thursday January 14, 2021 - Back to the 12:15 Noon Hour!
Amigos de Guatemala with Lynda Guthrie and Jean Herschede
While our main focus as Nevada City Rotarians is support of our local community, support of international programs is a high priority with our club reaching out with our work in Los Barilles and with our sister club relationships with Los Barriles in Mexico and Astana in Kazakhstan.
Carolyn Feuille, as our Club International Service Chair and the District 5190 International Service Chair, has kept us informed on several International Service opportunities, most notably the International Project Fairs coming up in the next few weeks.
This week Lynda Guthrie, International Service Co-Chair, will partner with Jean Herschede to tell us about a project in Guatemala that has grown from a small start to become a partnership of many Rotary clubs. Here is a brief introduction to “Amigos de Guatemala”:
Amigos de Guatemala is a partnership of twenty Rotary Clubs -- including Lynda's former Club of Healdsburg -- that provides humanitarian service projects in the Quiche district of Guatemala. The Clubs host a “hands-on” project each January/February and support an educational sponsorship program in Zacualpa, Guatemala. For the 2020 school year, 65 scholarships were awarded to indigenous Mayan middle and high school students who would not have the opportunity for an education. Over 72% of these students are female when just ten years ago not a single girl finished elementary school. With a literacy rate of 10% for women and 15% for men, having an education means providing for their family while still maintaining their culture.
Founded by Bob and Jan Hatmaker, the program began in 2003 with the Rotary Club of Groveland, CA building a school kitchen for a small Maya community (Jaibalito in Lake Atitlan). What the Rotary Club of Groveland began required the support and partnership of other Rotary clubs to continue.
In 2004 Amigos de Guatemala began to focus the majority of their services in the area of Zacualpa, Guatemala. They partner with the Association for Development in Zacualpa non-governmental organization – ADIZ-NGO. Since 2004 Amigos de Guatemala has completed over 20 major school development projects in the area of Zacualpa as well as assisting with their local medical needs.
In 2014 Amigos de Guatemala incorporated in California as a not for profit 501c3 corporation in an effort to expand its reach to those underserved in Latin America.
Jean Herschede, Director has always had a fondness for Latin America from having been an exchange student to Brazil. Her career in software consulting had her working in various locations “south of the border.” Always wanting to give back, particularly with a focus on education, Jean has been involved with Amigos de Guatemala since 2010.
Let’s have a conversation about leadership! with DG Berta and PDG Gail Ellingwood
Welcome one and all! Calling anyone and everyone who is interested in leadership in general or thinking about personal leadership development.
Starting next week - January 20, 2021, PDG Gail Ellingwood and DG Berta Pickett will hold an “open leadership conversation" for anyone interested in learning more about leadership in general (not necessarily leadership for Rotary). Our commitment is to meet via ZOOM approximately every other week, on alternating days and times, since we know not every day or time will be convenient for all.
Next Wednesday, 1/20/21 at 10 am, will be our first conversation, our first get-together. Each call will focus on a different aspect of leadership. Visit District 5190 Events Calendar for access information.
PDG Gail and DG Berta would like you to join in once, twice, or every time!
Visit A Conversation about Leadership for schedule and more details.

Around our Community
Dr. Scott Kellermann is our newly appointed Nevada County Public Health Officer and will be our guest speaker on February 4, 2021. He will be speaking to the COVID vaccine program and community outreach. A number of you participated in the Nevada County Flu Clinic last fall. As the County rolls out the COVID vaccine we can expect similar clinics. Scott has reminded us that to volunteer to support clinics, volunteers need to be registered at https://www.healthcarevolunteers.ca.gov/.
Our Club has known Dr Kellermann for many years through our partnership with the initial Uganda project to bring clean water and medical care to the Batwa people.

Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary. They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom. Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond. Thanks for sharing you!
