Staying Connected - August 6 5:30pm Social

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Join us this Week on Zoom:  Thursday August 6 at 5:30pm
2020 Nevada County Online Junior Livestock Auction
with Katie and Lindsey Alling and special guest "Peaches"

August is here (where did July go???) and most years, we would be busy preparing for the Nevada County Fair and five fun-filled days working the Rotary booth on Treat Street.  Sadly, this year we will have to find another way to satisfy our craving for a fresh pulled pork sandwich topped with creamy cole slaw.

The cancellation of the County Fair has a great impact not only on Rotary and all the other community non-profit organizations that rely on Treat Street revenues to fund our good works, but even more so on all the youth in our community that are participating in 4-H, FFA, or other of the ag programs offered.  The ag markets at the fair fund college tuitions, technical education, extracurricular activities and other life enrichment programs for our youth.

Inspired by fellow Rotarian and County Ag Commissioner John Taylor's passion for the youth and their animals, our club has a long history of supporting the junior livestock auction.  He would be tickled by this week's program.

Nevada County Virtual Junior Livestock & Ag Mechanics Auction Aug 13-15

This year there will not be the traditional form of auction. Instead the Junior Livestock & Ag Mechanics Auction will be hosted online August 13-15. Our program for this Thursday’s meeting will be a presentation on this resourceful way of supporting our ag students while observing the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are delighted that Katie & Lindsey Alling will join us to share plans for the event.

Lindsey has been a member of our Girls Who Code club for several years and is an accomplished Scratch coder. This year she has planted her first garden with lots of vegetable and herbs.  She also has hatched many little chicks for sale to people wanting to get into poultry and showed us two very sweet chicks on our first GWC Zoom call in March.  Lindsey raises a pig for the fair each year. With her pig "Peaches", she will give us some insights into her experience as a 4-H exhibitor.

Katie, Lindsey’s mother,  has been teaching Agriculture at Nevada Union for eighteen years and is an FFA Advisor. She is a board member of the Nevada County Livestock Producers Association, which is the group that puts on the livestock auction at the fair. She grew up in Grass Valley and currently lives in Nevada City where her family raises chickens, pigs and dogs. Her family also has a ranch on the San Juan Ridge, where they raise cattle and goats.

Lindsey and fellow 4-H (and FFA) members dedicate much of the year raising animals of all sizes from rabbits, chickens and turkeys, to goats, lambs, pigs and steer with a focus on the fair. The annual fair is the gala culmination of their year where they bring their prized animals to show and market.

Want to bid for yourself (or group of friends) or make a "bump" donation during the upcoming auction?  Register in advance at 2020 Online Junior Livestock and Ag Mechanics Auction on the website.

Goings On with Members

Here’s a shout-out to Walt Stickel, who ably represented our Rotary club in Nevada County’s Small Business PPE - mask and hand sanitizer - giveaway last week.

And another shout-out to Carolyn Feuille, who co-presented with Ramona Delmas an on-line Leadership Learning Academy (LLA) training session on Rotary’s International programs and grants. It was great to hear our International Service co-chair, who also serves as the District 5190 International Service chair, talk about International programs such as the Ecocina project with StoveTeam International and the Open World program, which our club supported so well with the visit of the delegation from Kazakhstan.

Watch for a membership program on LLA by PDG Doug and the District Membership team in the coming weeks.   The LLA sessions are recorded and can be viewed later if you are not able to participate in the live events.  This is just a sampling of what is available to all of us. With Leadership Learning Assembly, the District is highlighting and expanding key resources.  Learn more at Leadership Learning Assembly.

A big thanks to District Training Chair Karen who is not only coordinating the additional "Zoominar" sessions for LLA, she is also in charge of PETS training and is starting a new year teaching at Mount St Mary's Academy.

Save the date - D5190 DG Roberta Pickett Visit

Save the date, August 20 for a visit from District 5190 Governor Roberta “Berta” Pickett. Berta has expressed a strong desire to meet with our Club in person rather than through a Zoom meeting. Chris Newsom has graciously offered her front yard for DG Berta’s visit if we determine we can comfortably and safely host an outside Club event in accordance with State and County guidelines. Rotarians will be asked to Bring Your own Everything including a Brown Bag meal.  A Board meeting is scheduled ahead of the Club meeting. With conditions related to COVID-19 and government guidelines in flux, we will monitor the COVID risk and decide whether to meet face-to-face or via Zoom in early this month.

A Board meeting will preceed the Club meeting. More details will be shared as plans for this meeting are firmed up.

Keeping up with Happy/Sad Bucks

As we move into August, watch for communications from Treasurer Tom Ryan.  He is tracking Happy/Sad bucks pledges each week and will invoice members monthly for outstanding pledges.

If you have not been able to join us via Zoom but have a Happy or Sad message you want to share, reply to this Rotario with your news and what it is worth to you!  We will share it via Zoom and/or in the Rotario.  We have lots of $20.21 pledges coming in among the lesser and greater amounts. If you don't specify a $ value with your share, Tom Ryan is happy to assess his own value for you!

Many thanks for your support and generosity!  With both our big fundraisers canceled/delayed your Happy/Sad bucks provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.
