Success through Stubborn Resilience
I recently came across the phrase “Stubborn Resilience” in The Union newspaper. What a perfect phrase to capture the energy that allowed our first ever Nevada City Rotary Community Service Award honorees to determine they could provide what our community needed. With very little advance planning, they did what they decided was the right thing to do. Certainly their business model became a model of service that exemplifies Rotary’s 4-Way test.
“Stubborn resilience” was the theme of Ghidotti High School Amina Federspiel-Otelea’s 2021 Valedictorian Address, and that address was printed in The Union last Thursday. John Wilson brought it to my attention and reminded me that she was our Rotary Area speech contest winner in 2019 and placed second in the District contest as well. John and Susie have stayed connected with her since then. In Amina’s address, she makes clear the difference between usual school experience and the experience that the pandemic provided her classmates, one that required unusual resilience from those high school students.
Our speaker for Thursday’s meeting will be Zach Yeager, owner of Cascade Campers, a business he has grown for a few years and brought to our county. With the resilience that is required of an entrepreneur, he is filled with optimism and will convey that “can do” attitude when he is with us on Thursday.
And then there was Paul Harris who decided to start a small fellowship of businessmen all those years ago. Success of any kind depends on stubborn resilience!
Nevada County Public Health Recommends Masking Indoors
We ask that all Rotarians, vaccinated and unvaccinated, please wear a mask during our meetings in accordance with updated Nevada County recommendations released June 30, 2021. "Due to the recent dramatic increase in cases of COVID-19 in our community and following recently released Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines, the Nevada County Public Health Officer strongly recommends masking indoors. Nevada County’s daily case rate and case positivity rate have drastically increased in less than a month.
The steep increase is in part, due to the highly contagious Delta variant." Be safe and stay well!
It's Fair Time!
Next week Wednesday August 11 - Sunday August 15 is the annual Nevada County Fair. Tall Pines Nursery has taken over the Pulled Pork booth on Treat Street. Our Rotary signs are gone and the booth has been repainted red and white. The new team will be serving up their own recipe of Tall Pines Root Beer BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches.
Volunteers Needed!
Tall Pines is looking for volunteers to help staff the booth during Fair week. We want their first year to be successful! You know the drill! If you are willing and able to serve a shift or two, please signup online to help staff their booth.
Our Food Bank Partnership Continues
On Tuesday morning August 3 from 9:00am-11:30am, another team of Club members plus our adopted Jack will be packing brown bag lunches for youth who are on summer break. Then on Tuesday August 17 from 10am-noon, another team with be packing for home delivery. If you want to participate, contact either Susie or Robin!
Last week the Food Bank team called for a team to jump in and pack PPE equipment into Emergency Go Bags that will be distributed in the coming weeks. A partnership of FREED and the Food Bank, the sturdy red packs include a hand crank radio, non perishable food packs, personal hygene items, and much more. Working with Food Bank staff, Susie, Gayle and Robin packed over 250 packs.
Thank you Walt for dropping by to take photos and pack a few bags too!
Your Dues and Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!
Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary. They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom. Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond. Thanks for sharing you and for following the Four Way Test with your Happy Buck pledges to our Club!
And a big Rotary Thank You to John for stepping up to manage our financials!
