Staying Connected - August 13 12:15pm Lunch

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Join us this Week on Zoom:  Thursday August 13 at 12:15pm
Real Estate in the COVID Era with John Hensley and Dennis Gear

Ode to Fair Week ...

Hard to believe that in most years we would be busy setting up our Club's Treat Street booth in preparation for opening day on Wednesday!  So instead, this year we all get a chance to relax, enjoy the summer weather, and contemplate all the things we have to be thankful for.

Last week’s presentation by Lindsey and Katie Alling was a great reminder of how our contributions as Rotarians help support the youth in our community. It is encouraging to know that the local Ag programs are adapting to the restrictions of the COVID pandemic and moving forward with on-line activities to support the local youth participants in the programs.

If you saw the Special Edition Rotario late last week, you would have seen full details on the Virtual Livestock and Ag Mechanic Auction happening this week. The Auction will open for browsing, bidding and add-ons on Thursday, August 13 at 9am. Visit to access the auction site. Robin and I are planning to observe the progress of the auction, and while the selling price of most of the animals is beyond our budget, we plan to add a “Bump” to the auction price of Lindsey’s pig Peaches as our way of supporting her.

Robin has been monitoring youth activities at the Fair via Facebook/NevadaCountyFairgrounds  and the judges awards for the animals in this year’s auction. We are confident they did well but Lindsey and Peaches did not win the championship.

Real Estate in the COVID Era with John Hensley and Dennis Geare

Our program for this week focuses on Vocational Service, as we hear from fellow club members John Hensley, Recreation Realty/Nevada County Properties, Dennis Geare and Dennis's business partner Alisa Johnson of the Sierra Life Style Team about how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the local real estate market.

What you may not know

John Hensley "This is my 50th year in Real Estate.  I started out 50 years ago selling lots in Cascade Shores.  It is a wonderful business and I like it very much."  After working for a Bay Area company in Nevada County for a few years, John opened his own Recreation Realty on Harmony Ridge. The company added a second office in downtown Nevada City now at the top of Broad St (home to our Board meetings pre-Zoom).  A long time member of Nevada City Rotary, John is our Club's original bridge to our partnerships in Baja. John is also a proud supporter, former Board Member, and frequent show host at KVMR.  Long before any of us knew him, John was a child actor in Southern California. John’s acting career included roles in movies and television shows such as Lassie, Donna Reed, Wild Bill Hickok, Dupont Cavalcade of America, Life of Riley, Dragnet, Sherrif of Cochise,  Stepmother,  The Millionaire, and others.  Oh, and of course, John is a big Beatles, aka Ringo fan!

Dennis Geare has been in the Real Estate industry since 2000.  While attending UC Berkeley, Dennis found a summer job at Bookpeople Inc. where he began his 7 summer ‘Business Degree’ from beginning packing books to managing most departments of the company.  Dennis moved on to become Regional  Sales Manager, as well as Manager & Director of Sales for Random House, Inc.  He moved to Grass Valley in 1990 and has been in Real Estate since 2000, where he earned his Master’s Club designation his first year as a real estate professional.  In 2013-14 he served as the President of the Rotary Club of Nevada City, and in 2015-18 he served as the Assistant District Governor for District 5190 Area 4. He continues to serve the District in multiple leadership roles.  Dennis loves music, fly-fishing, reading books, collecting minerals, people…and someday he may pick up his guitars again.

Alisa Johnson has been a Nevada County resident for over 30 years.  She attended grades K-12 in Nevada County and her two girls are currently working their way through schools here.  She is a community leader, active in PTA and Girl Scout Leadership.  She began her career in Real Estate in 1980 and is an invaluable resource for young families looking for a home and information on Nevada County schools as she helps clients find their special place in Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley and surrounding communities.  Alicia loves helping people, spending time with family, swimming and travelling.

Speaking of Vocations

As Karen McDonald and Mount St Mary's Academy deligently prepare for the new school year, Karen's local private school is making headlines. Read the article in the LA Times This California school is open, ‘learning as we go.’  Our hats off and hearts open to our extraordinary teachers, starting with Karen, who are committed to the ongoing development and wellbeing of our children.

August 20 - D5190 DG Roberta Pickett Visit via Zoom

Over the past couple of weeks I have talked about the upcoming August 20th club visit by our District 5190 Governor Roberta Pickett.  The big question was whether we would be able to meet with DG Berta face-to-face, or go with a virtual meeting via Zoom.  After a long process of investigating the options and polling board members, I have made the decision that our club meeting with DG Berta will be conducted as a virtual Zoom meeting.

Key factors in making this determination were:

  • Nevada County guidelines (as of the August 4 update) make it clear that events such as our meeting are not allowed under the current restrictions
  • After checking with the presidents of the other four Rotary clubs in our Grass Valley/Nevada City Area 4, I learned that all four of the other clubs are choosing to meet with DG Berta via Zoom
  • My greatest concern is for the health and well-being of all club members, and choosing to conduct this meeting via Zoom removes any element of risk of transmission of the COVID virus.

The Board will participate in a Zoom meeting at 3:30pm ahead of the Club meeting at 5:30pm.

This week on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., Carol Scofield, District 5190 Community Services Chair, will be hosting a ZOOM meeting on Community Service.  Join Carol for an hour of engaging, interactive dialogue sharing and exploring new ideas for Community Service especially in today's new world.  Click to REGISTER.

August is Membership Month.  Watch for more details on the membership program on LLA to be hosted by PDG Doug McDonald, Richard Forster, and Pete Hochrein, the District Membership team, on August 26 at 5pm. Zoom details are on the District Event Calendr

The LLA sessions are recorded and can be viewed later if you are not able to participate in the live events.  This is just a sampling of what is available to all of us. With Leadership Learning Assembly, the District is highlighting and expanding key resources.  Learn more at Leadership Learning Assembly.
