Staying Connected - April 29 Fifth Thursday

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday April 29, 2021 - Fifth Thursday

We are dark -- Moved to RALLYE!!!!

Earth Day April 22 Work Day at Woolman Farm:

In celebration of Rotary's new Protecting the Environment focus, Nevada City Rotary decided to initiate an environmental project for Earth Day April 22 and Rotarians At Work Day 2021. Thank you Susie, Cathy, Carolyn, Bob, Chris, Pres Tom, Walt, Lynda, Gayle, and Robin for joining us to clear the orchard and grape arbor, weed the garden, plant our plants, repair the irrigation line ... just fun digging in the dirt together!

The Club worked with Malaika Bishop cleaning up the orchard and garden, repairing irrigation lines, and replanting an extended hedge of pollinator plants donated by Nevada City Rotary and a grant from Rotary District 5190. The Center is planning to repair fencing and hoop houses as it rebuilds the garden.

Supporting local healthy farms is critical to ensuring food security and a healthy environment for our community. Club members were delighted to partner in an outdoor socially distanced project – digging in the dirt together to rebuild our community and help ensure local healthy food sustainability.

District Grants support Nevada City Rotary Service Projects

Our Club is excited to have received TWO District 5190 grants this month. The first is for $320 to purchase the pollinator and other plants we put in the ground at Woolman last week.  We have completed that project and closed the grant.

And now we have a $2,200 grant to provide 1,100 servings of fresh produce -- fruits and vegetables -- to the Food Bank of Nevada County.  Susie is coordinating project scheduling.  Watch for dates for teams to pack food again at the Food Bank. Earlier in the year, we donated 1,800 cans of vegetables. In assessing current needs, Nicole McNeely, Executive Director, suggested we donate fresh produce from three local farms.  So not only will this project provide healthy foods to kids and families in need, we are also supporting local food production and our farmers.

This Week is World Immunization Week

Join with Rotary as we raise awareness of our work to #EndPolio and show that #VaccinesWork.

In today’s interconnected world, an outbreak anywhere is a threat everywhere. Vaccination is one of the best tools we have to improve people’s health and well-being. Even as COVID-19 vaccination efforts take place, vaccinations for other preventable diseases, such as polio and measles, need to continue in order to protect vulnerable children.

According to the World Health Organization, immunizations save up to 3 million lives per year. Thanks to the work of Rotary and our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, more than 19 million people who would otherwise have been paralyzed by polio can walk today.

Join with Rotary in reminding everyone that our progress in the fight to end polio is proof that vaccines work.

Spring Clean Up in Nevada City

Nevada City’s annual Spring Clean Up continues as fun community-building event to spruce up our city. Projects include power-washing sidewalks, painting curbs, building planter boxes, planting hanging baskets and planters, weeding, raking of leaves, and painting storefronts.

Workdays will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-11:30am throughout the month of April.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own mask, work gloves, and water. Tools and other supplies will be provided. In adherence to COVID-19 guidelines, masks will need to be worn and social distancing will be maintained among volunteers.

Miners Trail and/or Penzance Park
Or grab a couple Rotary buddies and head to Miners Trail or Penzance Park for spring cleaning along the properties we have adopted.

Susie and Cathy are planning a clean-up day at Penzance Park in May
