Staying Connected April 28, 2022

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday April 28 - 12:15pm Lunch ZOOM ONLY
Evani Radiya-Dixit - Rotary Global Peace Scholar

ZOOM with Global Scholar Evani

We’ll be back to all Zoom land this Thursday noon to hear from our Global Scholar Evani who is currently at the University of Cambridge, studying facial recognition technology, as its use applies to various populations. It will be fascinating to hear what conclusions she is coming to and how it relates to the overall goals of the Global Peace Scholarship that Rotary has provided.

There is a back story to how this global Grant Scholarship came about, and it is basically The One-Man Band Named Tom Ryan. Yes, Tom jammed with some musicians in the Mulholland Drive location of L.A. back in the day, but he kept that band playing about a year ago, to the tune of a Global Peace Scholarship Grant for Evani.

If you go to the RI website and type in “How to get a global grant for a global peace scholar,” you will find a 9 page “Supplement,” beginning with Overview of the process; Finding and Interviewing the eligible candidate; and a Timeline. The 9-step timeline begins with “organize a committee.” Time being of the essence, Tom took it on through all the steps and forms to get it submitted by last May 1. (Phew!) And then May to July involved financial submissions, payments, transfer of funds and a few odds and ends.

Big Nevada City Rotary THANKS to our own Tom Ryan for making this Global Peace Scholarship happen!

The Young Musicians Concert

Good News this week, all! The Young Musicians Concert which follows up the competition which our area Rotary clubs sponsored in partnership with Music in the Mountains will be ready for all to watch this coming Wednesday, April 27th at 7:00 pm. Click here to view the Young Musicians Concert on YouTube. The YouTube event will activate tomorrow. Our Area 4 winner will represent us on Saturday afternoon at the district music contest, with the potential of winning prize monies up to $1,000.00.

To Dennis Geare, Conference Committee Chairs Tom Milam (Registrar), Cathy Wilcox-Barnes (Sgt At Arms), Robin Milam (General Sessions), and all the Nevada City Rotarians who have responsibilities in this weekend’s “All Aboard with Rotary” fun times in Tahoe, a big hand!  See you there!

Thursday 12:15pm April 28 ZOOM Only with Evani!

Join us for an update and personal dialogue with Evani. As a Rotary International Global Peace Scholar, Evani Radiya-Dixit is conducting research on policymaking for facial recognition technology. Advised by Professor Gina Neff, Evani is a Visiting Researcher at Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, at the University of Cambridge. Evani completed her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Stanford University. Previously, she worked on machine learning projects at Nvidia and Google. Her research work has been published at the International Conference on Machine Learning, the Stanford Public Interest Technology Lab, and the think tank New America. With her interest in public service, Evani recently worked at the U.S. federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and served as a data privacy strategist for a California City Council. She also served as a Teaching Assistant for Computer Science courses and taught in Bogotá through Stanford CS Bridge. The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sawston is her in country host Club.

Evani's research on policymaking for facial recognition technology will provide a stronger framework for accountability of current and emerging applications of facial recognition technology. Related questions Evani is raising: What new norms and values do we imagine for ourselves? Can we imagine how technology, police, the state, etc. might play a different role in our lives? Imagination and reality go hand in hand. To quote Derrick Bell, “To see things as they really are, you must imagine what they might be.”

Count Down to Conference! Registration is closed! Let the good times begin!
