Last Week's Meeting - Evans Phelps, Mayor of Nevada City

Mayor Phelps was a bundle of energy as she addressed our club at lunch this past week. The mayor spoke highly of the attractiveness of our town and all that it has to offer to visiting tourists. The mayor also outlined some of the facts and resources it takes to run our little city. She mentioned that Nevada City has a budget of about three million dollars and one third of it is used for various aspects of law enforcement, including salaries and benefits. The mayor went on to itemize several ongoing challenges, including the placement of cell phone towers, the ongoing situation with homeless people, and the aging physical infrastructure of the city. On a more positive note, the mayor also mentioned that the streets of Nevada city are closed 60 days a year to accommodate various festivals and parades including Summer Nights, Victorian Christmas, Fourth of July, Constitution Day, and other significant events. Lastly, not to be forgotten, the mayor mentioned the wonderful article in the previous Sunday edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, where the Travel section featured things to do in Nevada County and highlighted Nevada city specifically.

Some Feedback from a student who recently finished a REGL adventure weekend

Michelle Ogaida, the teacher of one of our REGL students, received this message from the Boy's parents;

"Alex will not be in school today - he is exhausted but he must have had a great time because he wouldn't stop talking about it on the drive home."   Well done, my friends!  Sounds like it was fabulous! Thank you so much!

Plans are also formulating for the March trip to Baja for our club members to support the clean water initiative at Las Barrilias. Watch the Rotario for details as they evolve.
