Rotario - November 3, 2016

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.

This Week's Evening "Mixer" Meeting - Gage McKinney , author of  "McBoyle's Gold"

Gage McKinney has written several books on Nevada County history, including The 1930s: No Depression Here and When Miners Sang. His most recent MacBoyle's Gold tells the story of a mining engineer who struck it rich and plowed his wealth back into the region he loved.  This story should be of special interest to those of us who reside in Nevada County, since Errol MacBoyle's favorite venture was the Idaho-Maryland Mine, right here in Grass Valley.  Gage, our guest speaker, works for Lockheed Martin Corporation and lives in Sunnyvale with his wife, Ilka Weber. Five generations of his family have lived in Nevada County.

Welcome Trisha Dellis!

Welcome our soon to be newest Rotarian, Trisha Dellis! We are looking forward to inducting Trisha this week! Trisha is superiendent of Nevada City Schools. A graduate of Nevada Union High School, Trisha worked in NJUHSD since 1992 in a variety of roles, including grade school teacher, assistant principal as well as principal of Nevada Union High School, founding principal of Ghidotti Early College High School and director of adult alternative education. She and her family have deep roots and history in the community, having had both her children and siblings attend the elementary schools.  Her husband Jeff is athletic director at Nevada Union.

Last Week's Meeting - Shannon Cueva, Director of Shady Creek Nature Center

Shannon resented our club with a very engaging description and presentation of the Shady Creek nature Center which is a little-known, but very well-established camp for schoolkids. This camp provides many opportunities for kids from diverse backgrounds to bond not only was nature, but with each other. This healthy outdoor environment is especially appealing to folks who want to expose kids to the rural aspects of living with nature and appreciating the wild animals around us. Shannon went on to explain that the camp has a historic relationship with Rotary clubs in Yuba County and encourages clubs like ours to also support their efforts.
