Thursday May 30 2019-2020 Club Leadership Retreat

Returning President Cathy Wilcox-Barnes is organizing a Club Leadership Retreat on Thursday Evening May 30. Club leadership will be meeting at Walt and Sandy Stickel's home at 5:30 to socialize a bit. Meeting will run from 6pm to 8pm.  Thank you Walt, Sandy and Cathy!

Club Action - Bylaws Review

Our Club Bylaws need to be updated to reflect current Club practices including our varied meeting schedules and RI Council of Legislation changes. For a while RI referred to Youth Services as New Generations.  However, that language is no longer being used. The attached proposed Bylaws reflect these changes.  The base of these Bylaws were prepared by attorney Michael Colantuono during his tenure.

At our Board Meeting of May 27, 2019 the Board approved updated Club Bylaws pending review and approval by the Club. The bylaws are available for your review at Rotary Club of Nevada City Bylaws - Pending Approval.

Current Bylaws may be viewed at Rotary Club of Nevada City - Current BylawsThe Board is proposing the Club approve the Bylaws at our second meeting in June which is a lunch meeting on June 13.  If you have questions, please address them to either Robin Milam, Secretary, or Tom Ryan, President.

Last Week: Are you fire safe? Susan Rogers, Fire Safe Council

Thank you Susan Rogers!  Being Fire Wise is an urgent focus for all of us living in our community and the Sierra Foothills. Susan Rogers is on the Partnership Education Committee of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County and is Vice Chair of the Nevada County Coalition of Firewise Communities. She provided valuable information that is designed to save lives and property.

Are you fire safe? The Nevada County Fire Safe Council has a repository of resources and range of services to help us become fire wise and prepared at

Let's work together to become a Fire Safe Club.  Ready to prepare?  Here are a few steps you and your family can take now:

  1. Click to Signup for CodeRed. Register your cellphone numbers in addition to your land lines.
  2. Add CodeRED's two phone numbers 1(866) 419-5000 and 1(855) 969-4636 to your cell phone and/or landline contacts as "CodeRED Emergency Alerts." This way, when you receive a phone call from either of CodeRED's phone numbers during an emergency event, you will be able to recognize the call as a CodeRED alert rather than easily mistaking the 1-866 or 1-855 number as a telemarketer.
  3. Download the 2019-20 Fire Season Guide and create a plan. The guide includes instructions on Emergency Preparedness and Evacuation plans. The Guide is filled with checklists, emergency contacts and instructive ways to prepare now.  You will be impressed with the number of ideas you have not thought about until reviewing this guide.
  4. Download the The 10 Minute Emergency Drill and do a drill with your loved ones.

Annual Adaptive Education & 7 Hills Leadership Field Day

Our Annual Adaptive Education and Seven Hills Leadership Class outing is this Wednesday May 29 from 8:45am - 12 noon. We will be on the upper field at Seven Hills Middle School.  We will again provide lunch and will also assist staff monitoring the students.  For lunch, we will again be building sandwiches on site.  A favorite for the students are all the homemade cookies we bring.  A big thank you to John Wilson, our fabulous Youth Services Chair, for coordinating plans with the school staff.  John is circulating a signup sheet for volunteers, cookies, tables, chairs bowls, cookie sheets, and more.  Please contact John to participate and determine what is still needed!

Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Ln, Nevada City, CA.  To find the school turn on to Brock Rd off Zion Avenue in front of SPD Market.  Brock Rd dead ends at Hoover.  Turn right on to Hoover and follow the drive through the first parking lot,

Then take the second right when the road starts to loop back BEHIND the Administration Buildings to the second lot below the athletic field. Do NOT turn into the District Office/Preschool parking lot; continue to the second right turn. A sign will be posted to show the way. For heavier tables, ice chests, etc. golf carts witll be provided by the school and we will alternate vehicles driving up to the fields to unload.

Girls Who Code at Seven Hills

Girls Who Code program for this year is coming to a close. A BIG THANK YOU to NANCY KEMP, Ms Girls Who Code Extraordinaire!  She has hoslted almost every week, coordinated the program and provided snacks when a volunteer did not step up to do so.  Thank you also to all who have provided snacks throughout the year.  This is a very special program addressing a very important need for our young girls.

Children's Festival - July 19

This year's Children’s Festival, which is scheduled for Friday, July 19, at Pioneer Park in Nevada City.  Nevada City Rotary has been involved with planning and hosting crafts -- especially Nancy Kemp, Gayle Denney and Sandy Stickel for many years.  The planning team is now in the process of organizing all the volunteers it takes to make the festival a reality!

The Festival has two sessions.  The morning session runs from 9 a.m. to noon.  We then take a break (during the heat of the day) and come back for an evening session from 5-8 p.m.  We will have about 25 crafts tables at each session, and each table needs 3-5 volunteers to help the kids create their works of art.  We also have a number of activities that are especially well suited for teens who want to volunteer (and we provide documentation of community service).

Please get in touch with Robin (as Sandy and Walt are traveling in July) and Gayle if you would like to work the Solar Sunprint or Renaissance Rubbings craft tables.  Or get in touch with Nancy if you would like to volunteer for other crafts.
