Quote for the Day:
Joy in looking and comprehending is nature's most beautiful gift.
Today's Speaker, Dave Schmall, joined Swift Communications, the parent company of The Union, as Director of Digital Development in February of last year. In July, he was named Publisher of The Union. He has more than twenty years of multi-media experience in several U.S. markets including Minneapolis, Sacramento, Dallas and Atlanta.
Just prior to joining Swift, Dave was publisher for a group of four community newspapers and the Appeal-Democrat, the daily newspaper located in Marysville, CA that was named one of "10 Newspapers That Do It Right" in 2011 by Editor & Publisher magazine.
Dave grew up in Chicago, earned his degree at Marquette University and he and his wife Jenn now reside in Penn Valley. He enjoys live music, has a purple belt in taekwondo and is on an endless journey in search of better wine and cheese.
Notes From Last Meeting
Once again two outstanding teens have overwhelmed us with presentations at our club speech contest providing a difficult task for the judges. Their assigned topic was "Peace Through Service. How does my service to my fellow man create peace in my home, community, and the world?". Both Sarah Laplante, Bear River, and Maxie Holmberg-Douglas, Nevada Union, enlightened us with creative thinking along with some Rotary history and objectives. Congratulations to Maxie for winning first place. She will represent us at the area speech contest on Wednesday, April 4, 12 Noon at Grass Valley United Methodist Church. Save the date (we will not meet on the 15th). Maxie just might represent our area at District Conference in May. The contest was well conducted by Laura van den Berg and her team. Yea, Laura; yea, team!
The meeting was conducted by the ever competent pP John Burke. John reminded us that he was president some 20 years ago when Karl Stewart and Ralph Sawvell, along with other members who were active at that time, served on his board and committees. Although there were many highlights during his tenure, one that came to mind is when he and Jay Jensen piloted a small plane to Susanville with Ellen Davis aboard to check out a project which became the idea behind our radio auction. According to Ellen, it was a beautiful sunny day for the flight up, but changed to overcast for the flight back with poor visibility. Ellen was OK with it until Jay turned to John and said, "John, do you know where we are?". According to John, Ellen was a little out of sorts after that!
Along with our speakers, guests were Breakfast 49er member Mike Ferguson, Janis Aydelott, Gil Dominguez and Maxie's dad, camera in hand. George Rebane won the raffle, but was unsuccessful in matching cards.
A highlight of the announcements was from President Elect Dennis Geare who announced that Robin Milam had accepted the position of President Elect Nominee and will serve as our president during the 2014-15 Rotary year. Good going Dennis and thank you Robin! PE Dennis also announced the upcoming District Assembly slated for Saturday, April 20, at the Atlantis in Reno. All members are encouraged to attend this one day training event, especially those who will be officers or committee heads beginning July 1. Registration is made online through the district website and it is up to each attendee to register. The tab will be taken care of by the club. Coffee, tea, juice and pastries will be provided during registration; lunch is also included.
Robin Milan announced that Nancy Kemp, Pete Brost and she will walk the Noel Carter Trail on March 23 in preparation for the long awaited dedication ceremony to be scheduled soon. Robin also announced that a social outing is being planned with the Penn Valley club taking the lead. This will be a theatre night scheduled for Friday, March 29, at Off Broadstreet to see their new production, "Forever Meadow Green" featuring regulars Kris Stephanian, Cris Crockett and Darryl Stein. Tickets are $25; see Ellen to make your reservation.
Also announced was the board's decision to conduct the Adventures and Wine fund raiser in September. For a summer fund raiser we will be holding a "Treasure ReSale" (i,e., a "Quality Items Rummage Sale") on one Saturday in June in conjunction with the Nevada City Farmers' Market. Now is the time set aside these special items you no longer need, but can't bear to throw away!
On the tables last week were coin boxes left for members to take home to collect their spare change for Foundation giving. John Hensley kicked off the campaign with $1 (he almost donated 20 pesos). Members were invited to bring the full containers back at any meeting. The funds will be credited to the donors towards their first or next Paul Harris. Members were reminded that our goal is for each member to contribute something towards the Annual Program Fund so that we become an Every Member, Every Year club again this year. The REAL goal is for each member to contribute at least $100 by June 30 every year so that we become a Sustaining Club. By the way, George Rebane, Pearce Boyer, Dave Denney and Dennis Geare were acknowledged as Sustaining Members for the current year. Two of those donors have a small amount taken for the bank accounts every month - an easy way for any of us to meet a $100 or $1,000 commitment.
We should try to reach $6,000 by March 31, and we are only a little over half way there. Remember, a $500 check will be matched by points and a Paul Harris! (Hey Hensley, $499 more and you have a Paul Harris!) Bring those check books and credit cards to the next few meeting so we will be sure to meet our goals!
Lunch rates are $14 and $7 for non eaters, effective March 7, 2013
Next week inductions. The following two professionals will be inducted for membership in the Rotary Club of Nevada City next week.
