Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.
This Week's Speakers - Christie Gillison and Caitlin Jones from Partners in English Language Learning (PiELL).
Caitlin, originally from Dallas, studied criminal justice at the University of Texas at Dallas and decided to work with groups disproportionately impacted by the justice system. She spent three years teaching ESL in the classroom setting before moving to Penn Valley in joining the PiELL Board. While her specialty is social media outreach, Caitlin is also an aspiring comedian.
Last Week's Mixer Speaker - Pat Dyer, owner of Utopian Stone
Pat provided us with a biographical sketch of his life story starting with his youthful days in Grass Valley, the years in College at Cal Poly where he met his future wife and business partner, Diane, and the start of his professional life at Grass Valley Group. Pat went on to outline his many jobs, especially his one year stint at the Paiute Indian Reservation at Pyuramid Lake, NV. Pat then descrivbed his silversmithing career in Nevada City where he also took time to serve in Public office, including becoming the Mayor of Nevada City.. Pat really garnered our attention passing out samples of his jewelery anf gemstones. One of the most notable items was his 4 oz. gold nugget, valued over several thousand dollars. Of course Pat kept a close watch to ensure that all of his samples were returned.
Holiday Party slated for December 15 at The Bridge House
Hopefully you will be able to attend our annual event at theis new location ! Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be the order of the day, along with soft drinks and some wine. Feel free to bring your own beverage of choice as well.. The party starts at 5:30pm and the cost is $20 per person. If you haven't signed up already, please RSVP to Judi Soldavini (email@example.com or 265-8524) by Dec.10, so we may advise the caterer.
We will not be Bellringing this year. In lieu of bellringing, we will be donating gifts for children and adults to the Salvation Army and Hospitality House. Please bring your gifts to our Holiday Party. New toys and clothing as well as gently used clothing and household items are welcome! Contact Robin if you have questions.
Volunteers have started "winterizing" the Fair Booth
This past Saturday a small group of us dedicated workers started winterizing the Booth cooking area. We were able to purchase the plywood paneling, applied primer to the panels, and cut the panels to the sizes fitting the screened areas. The team was also able to cut and apply moldings that will hold the panels in place. Many thanks to Dave Bunje and his trusty pickup truck, Tom Milam, with his skill saw expertise, Ken Ching, for his patience with the paint roller, and the general "go-fer" support provided by myself and Paul Boch. We will need another small work party to put the final coat of paint on the panels, mount the locking mechanisms, and install the door.
