Quote of the Week
My life is every moment of my life. It is not a culmination of the past.
Enjoy some wines from Nevada City Winery. Delia Orduna, Sales Manager at Nevada City Winery will be with us.
What a great turn out and program we had last week! We were introduced to little known, but respected author Josiah Royce Jr., who just happened to be born in Grass Valley in 1855. The speaker was Dwayne Tunstall, Assistant Professor at Grand Valley State University, Allenstown, Michigan, who was introduced by Iven Lourie, Adjunct, Sierra College, Rocklin. Professor Tunstall was in the area for The Josiah Royce Society "Royce, California, and the World" conference held at The Holbrooke Hotel with book signings and readings at other venues in the area. Details of Royce and the conference are in last week's issue of "The Prospector".
Professor Tunstall shared that there is a huge following of Royce and his work. He told of the author's history in Grass Valley, his moving on to be educated at Harvard and to become known for his humanistic philosophy. Tunstall also shared Royce's first book, written at age 8 or 9, but not published until recently, "Pussy Blackie's Travels". The book was designed, illustrated and published by local professionals and underwritten by Tunstall and Lourie.
A big thank you goes to Nicole Dillard for bringing this outstanding program to the Rotary Club of Nevada City!
In Other News
In addition to Professors Tunstall and Lourie being our guests, we had three visiting Rotarians in attendance: Mark Fleming - Penn Valley, John Voter - Grass Valley, and pP of our club, Dave Benje. Also visiting was the love of Jack Dinwiddie's life, Marty Dinwiddie. President Dennis was down on his luck in that he lost the bell for the first time, but not likely the last, and was unsuccessful in the card match after winning the raffle drawing. To his credit, he ran a remarkable smooth and enjoyable meeting.
That greedy Buhlis guy was after our money again! He reminded us that our goal is to raise $6,000 for the Annual Fund and another $2,000 for Polio Plus by June 30. He encouraged members to consider TRF Direct, an RI program where contributions can be made for as low as $10 a month to meet the minimum requirement of $100 per member to the fund. Members can register on-line, by phone to RI or complete a commitment in writing. See Bob for the application form. So far we have four members on the TRF Direct plan contributing a total of $95 per month. Will you be the fifth member? Watch as the number grows!
First Thursday Mixer
President Dennis is rolling out his First Thursday Mixer starting in September. Our regular meeting on Sept. 5th will be in the evening at the National from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Bring your family and friends for some fun. $5 cover includes Hors d'oeuvres, no host bar.
A smart phone or tablet that can be donated to the Club so Ellen can process credit cards. Must be wifi capable.
