Area 4 Speech Contest

Grass Valley United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m

Notes From Last Meeting
pP and Treasurer Forever Ellen Davis served as President of the Week with distinction at our last meeting. She reflected that PDG Dave Denney was governor the year she was president in 2001-02. The fair booth and radio auction were the two main fund raisers that year, but the year was impacted by 9/11 when many Rotarians stepped up to up to the plate to support those affected. A highlight of the year was receiving one of the districts six RI President's Distinguished Club awards.

The program was both entertaining and informative. Jeanne Wood, Executive Director for Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS), shared the twenty year history of CATS in Nevada City and Grass Valley. With help from board directors Olivia Pritchert and Tynowyn, Jeannie explained the plot of their up coming production, "Journey to the West" - a story of a 7th century monk traveling over a 16 year period. Tynowyn is the music and sound director who played some of the music she has developed for the show which overlaps eastern and western themes. The costumes, make up and costumes are bound to be spectacular. The cast has 21 members playing 127 parts, wearing 129 costumes and head pieces. There are three musicians playing 29 instruments. Our own local Diane Fetterly is directing. The April 19th performance will benefit the KVMR/Nevada Theatre construction project.

In addition to our guests from CATS, Nancy Knaus, bride of Ron, was present. Nicole Dillard won the raffle, but not the card match. pP Ben Barretta won the two tickets to "Journey to the West" donated by CATS. PE Robin Milam advised us during her Rotary moment about the club locator app which is available on smart phones.

PDG Dave Denney reported that the group who "took a hike" along the Noel Carter Trail enjoyed the walk, but concluded that it would be better to have the dedication set for May 11 someplace else since the trail might be too difficult for some to manage. The time will be 10:30 a.m. at a location to be determined

PE Robin reminded members that the area speech contest will be April 3 at Grass Valley United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. This is a lunch meeting and the cost is $12. The music contest will be April 7 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the club fund raiser, a "Treasure" Rummage Sale, will be on Saturday, June 15, in conjunction with the Nevada City Farmers' Market. This will be held at the Alpha Building, former home of Broad Street Furnishings.
