Notes From Last Meeting
Last week's meeting was moved to April 3 for the Area Speech Contest.
It was held at the Grass Valley United Methodist Church.

On Wednesday April 3, five impressive Nevada Union high schools students competed to represent our Area at the District 5190 Speech Contest on May 18, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at John Ascuaga's Nugget, Sparks, Nevada.  Each contestant spoke about "Peace Through Service." How can my service to my fellow man create peace in my home, community and the world?

Joe Fenner, a Freshman at Nevada Union High School is first place winner and will represent our area at the 5190 District Contest. Joe presented a very moving speech using the story of a young Filipino homeless boy (who is Joe's same age) as a personal inspiration and demonstration of the difference one can make at any age. He represented Grass Valley Rotary.

Maxine Holmberg-Douglas earned 2nd place. Maxine was selected by our Nevada City Club for the second year in a row. She is a Junior at Nevada Union. Miles Baker was 3rd place winner. A Senior at Nevada Union, Miles represented Nevada County South Rotary. Bailey Bivens, a Junior, and Ben Beltran, a Sophomore, won Honorable Mention. While this year's Area contestants all attend Nevada Union, they spanned all four classes from Freshman to Senior. Robin Milam said "I was most impressed by how personal and passionate the students were in delivering their speeches. This was a very close competition. Selecting one winner was very difficult. It was certainly an inspiring event. We are all proud of who these young people are."

A big thank you to Phil Ruble, area-chair, to Barbara Ross who coordinated scheduling among the contestants, clubs and teachers, to Laura van den Berg who coordinated for Nevada City Rotary, and to all who made this year's Speech Contest a success for all!
