Aimee Retzler, Executive Director, co-founded Sierra Harvest after she had lunch with her kindergartner at school and noticed how much food was going to waste leaving kids hungry. She was curious as to why a community that is surrounded by an abundance of agriculture, wasn’t feeding kids nutrient-dense, locally grown foods that were delivered in an educational way.  Her passion for making sure kids get the best food possible is what fueled her to begin the farm-to-school program in Nevada County.  She has guided the activities of Sierra Harvest since October 2008, building the organization from a grassroots community coalition to a sustainable nonprofit.   

Before Ray became Rotary District 5180 Governor for the year 2019-2020, he realized that he had an interesting and unique background growing up and living in different parts of the US. Due to his background, he has met and become friends with a variety of individuals from different ethnic, religious, and gender backgrounds and was able to get along with them.

This program is about what Ray has learned from these experiences and his perceptions of how to move forward in an environment of detest and distrust. Join us as Ray leads a very important discussion on different aspects of conversations and how conversions can be used to find solutions.

Sierra Spivack, a student at SAEL academy is a Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound Student sponsored by Penn Valley Rotary.  Sierra is headed to Italy this Fall.  It was through Cathy and our Interact team's encouragement that she applied to be an RYE student in Italy next year.

Melisa was born and raised in Charlotte, NC. She practiced radiology in various settings from 1991 to 2019, most recently as owner of Insight Imaging providing low cost imaging and education to women in our community. She retired to pursue medical mission work.

Mark was raised in the Bay Area. He practiced Family Medicine and later Emergency Medicine between 1988 and 2020. He practiced locally and most recently at Rideout Hospital in Marysville. He retired to pursue work in medical missions.

Melisa and Mark have two adult children, Daniel and Luke who live in Berkeley and Calca, Peru respectively.

Enjoy Louise's first craft talk with Nevada City Rotary.

Louise has been a Rotarian since 1998 serving at least twice as Club President in the Rotary Clubs of Clear Lake and Ribon, CA. She was a member of Nevada City 49er Rotary before transfering to our Club this Fall.

Louise and her husband Jeff moved to Nevada City in July 2013 when Louise was hired as superintendent of the Nevada Joint Union High School District. A lifelong learner, teacher and coach, Louise has recently retired from a 34-year career in public education. She is deeply engaged in our community as a lifelong educator and currently serves on the Nevada County Board of Education and Boards of NJUHS Foundation, Sierra Streams Institute, and other organizations.

Gil Mathew has enjoyed a long career in business and sales.  Starting in 1969 with Eocom Corporation as financial analyst.  This start up company in optics and sensors was shortly purchased by Perkin-Elmer after growing it to a multi-million dollar company.  
 

He then moved into the mortgage banking business with Uni-Cal Mortgage and then his own mortgagecompany Benchmark Financial.  Then an opportunity became available to start his own manufacturing company that became Benchmark Thermal, manufacturing and distributing industrial heating systems to the semi-conductor industry and other OEMs.

Gil sold that business after 25 years and accepted the position of CEO of the Nevada County Economic Resource Council doing economic and community development for the County of Nevada.  

Gil’s s next career was in the alternative energy business as a co-owner of EnPower Systems, Inc.  this company maintains sales and marketing of energy systems from Photovoltaic to wind energy to micro-hydro, serving both the on-grid market and the off-grid market 

Most currently Gil has rejoined the ERC as Executive Director.  Gil is a member of Nevada City 49er Breakfast Rotary and a former member of our Club.

Gina Stassi Vanacore is the Community Outreach Manager for Pioneer Community Energy.

With more than two decades of experience working on energy-related issues, she has worked on some of California’s most pressing initiatives, including dam removal at the California/Oregon border; introducing the Western Energy Imbalance Market and regionalizing the California power grid; curtailment and the “Duck Curve;” diversification of renewable energy resources; integration of clean fleet technology; and NEM reform.

Gina previously was a Vice President at Porter Novelli/Sacramento, a statewide public affairs firm, where she managed all aspects of strategic planning, research, plan implementation, and evaluation for a variety of clients. She also served as the Media Relations Manager for the California Lottery and spent several years in broadcast and print media while working for Brown Broadcasting Company, a group of West Coast radio stations, and at The Sacramento Bee.

Gina earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a Public Relations emphasis, from CSU, Sacramento and graduated with honors.

Wider Watershed: at Bear Yuba Land Trust's Wildflower Ridge Preserve

Our Environmental Sustainabilty Committee invites you to join us in a morning of restoration and clean up at Wildflower Ridge Preserve as part of South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) Annual Clean Up Day.  A BBQ celebration follows in Pioneer Park at noon.

The Wildflower Ridge Preserve is located just outside of downtown Grass Valley on Ridge Road at Rough & Ready Highway. Bear Yuba Land Trust has recently acquired this land - to be preserved forever! BYLT staff will be leading a team of volunteers during the cleanup and restoration efforts. This is a special restoration site, working with Bear Yuba Land Trust to remove invasive plants from the preserve. For more information about BYLT please visit: https://www.bylt.org/.

To reach the trailheads, from the top of Mill Street in downtown Grass Valley go 1.4 miles west out of town on West Main Street (becomes Rough & Ready Highway) to the intersection of Rough & Ready Highway and Ridge Road. The east end trailhead is at the dirt parking area next to the A to Z Supply “Garden Center” on Ridge Road. (N39.22928 W121.07946). When church is not in service, you can use the parking lot at Twin Cities Church to access the trails.

Debbie Gibbs is a Grass Valley native, but relocated for 26 years to  Washington DC working with USDA’s  WIC Program. After returning in 2000, she began raising fiber producing llamas, sheep, goats, and sold hand crafted items at local markets. She was a member of Nevada County Grown from its inception and served as its treasurer and president.  Debbie is now an active member of Nevada County Climate Action Now, the WasteNot group, Local Food Policy Council Steering Committee, the Foothill Fibers Guild and is Co-chair of the Kentucky Flat Firewise Community.

Walt's Dad immigrated as a child from Germany to the US.  Walt is very proud of his German family connections. Expect lots of interesting stories!

Cathy Anderson-Meyers is co-founder and driving force behind the Barbara Schmit Millar Triathlon which was created to honor her and support local breast cancer patients in our community. Proceeds from the event have funded free mammograms and scholarships. The Barbara Schmidt Millar Scholarships Program is dedicated to Nevada Union Senior females who are graduating and pursuing a career in the medical field. Through the years, women in our Club volunteered to assist with the race and/or compete!

The Sierra Nevada Family Medicine Residency Program is an integrated rural training program based out of the Dignity Health Methodist Hospital of Sacramento Family Medicine Residency Program. Residents will complete their intern year (PGY-1) at Methodist Hospital and Mercy Family Medical Clinic in Sacramento, CA. In their 2nd and 3rd years (PGY-2 and PGY-3), residents will train in the beautiful, historic town of Grass Valley, CA at Chapa-De Indian Health Clinic (Tribal FQHC), Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and local subspecialty outpatient offices.

We are partnering with two medical organizations with deep ties to the community and surrounding area. The program will be rewarding while appropriately intense with a challenging, inpatient heavy intern year to prepare residents for their rural training in PGY-2 and PGY-3. We are dedicated to work-life balance and the surrounding environment makes that very easy. The continuity clinic abuts a scenic 5 mile trail loop that is one of hundreds of miles of beautiful trails in our scenic Nevada County. Lake Tahoe and the Sierra foothills have numerous skiing, snowboarding, hiking, running, fishing, boating, rafting and kayaking opportunities less than an hour away. Year round sunshine and abundant natural beauty make the outdoors your playground.

October 24 is World Polio Day

Nevada City Rotary is Growing Pumpkins for Polio. Watch for details for how we plan to sell pumpkins to raise money to End Polio.

As World Polio Day approaches, Rotary needs our help to amplify our message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from a devastating disease.

We have made tremendous progress since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched:

• A 99.9% reduction in cases of illness caused by wild poliovirus
• 3 billion children immunized
• 125 countries where polio was endemic reduced to two — Afghanistan and Pakistan — with the virus contained in just a few districts and provinces

But even just one case still represents one child’s life forever changed by polio. That’s why Rotary members must remain tenacious and keep our promise: We won’t stop until we know that no child will ever again experience the paralyzing effects of polio.

Let’s use World Polio Day to advocate for the support we need to make history by eradicating polio. Together, we end polio!
