Breaking Down the Barriers

Mar. 13, 2025 12:15 p.m.

Four community members from Nevada County Pride’s Speakers Bureau will share their insights about Breaking Down the Barriers in the LGBTQ+ and multi-cultural community and their collective/individual focus on fostering a more vibrant welcoming community, including how to be an ally.

Our beautiful Nevada County is home to a diverse community of LGBTQ+ members. From Alta Sierra to Truckee, we represent 5 to 7% of our county of 100,000 people. We range in age from youth to senior citizens. We are parents, children, siblings, and friends. To many of you, our community is mostly invisible. But no doubt you have met us - in organizations you are involved in, restaurants or coffee shops, schools, stores you shop at, and other places. Some of you may have never had an opportunity to get to know our community better. We can assist you in doing that.

Club Social - Kevin Ross

Music in the Mountains Summer Programs

Apr. 03, 2025 5:30 p.m.

Joining us for our Thursday meeting on April 3rd will be Kevin Ross of Music in the Mountains (MIM). From teaching music to more than 700 elementary school kids each week, to presenting world-class, professional musicians on Nevada County stages, MIM has been a Nevada County staple for more than 40 years. Kevin will be talking with us about their education programs, opportunities to volunteer, and of course–their upcoming concerts.

About Kevin Ross

Kevin Ross moved to Grass Valley in 1976 with his immediate and extended family, where they owned and operated a tire store in the Brunswick basin for fourteen years. His grandmother inspired him through encouragement and exposure to fall in love with singing choral music. This was further supported by all the public schools he attended here in Grass Valley: from Mrs. Rocker’s second grade class where Kevin sang everyday with his classmates while she would play the piano, to singing in the Nevada Union chamber choir with the legendary Don Bagget. While earning a degree in Secondary Education from Reno Nevada, he found small choirs to join to fulfill his passion to sing. Soon afterwards, he moved back to Grass Valley with his three-year-old, knowing it was a wonderful community for his child to grow up in. Kevin auditioned and joined the Music in the Mountains chorus and he is an active member in the community, volunteering for other nonprofits, and singing and acting in local theater companies.

Gary Petersen, Mayor Nevada City

State of the City

Apr. 24, 2025 12:15 p.m.

Nevada City's Mayor Gary Petersen is going to give a State of the City talk!  Should be fun and enlightening!

A big shout out and thank you to our Mayor for serving as a Judge at our Inaugural 2024 Paws and A Cause!

Gary was elected to City Council of Nevada City in November 2020 and currently serves as Mayor.

Gary Petersen first came to Nevada City in the 1970s. For seven years he worked with the U.S .Forest Service as a “hot shot” firefighter, a tank truck operator, and a Heli attack squad leader in California and seven other states. This led to a 30-year career in airport management during which he served as the Nevada County Airport manager. He helped to reorganize Nevada County government, and worked on the United Way Community Report Card.

In 2005, Gary relocated after being offered a position as the Salinas Municipal Airport director, and eventually became the city of Salinas Public Works director. During this time, he chaired the Governing for Racial Equity program, produced one of the first Groundwater Sustainability Plans in California, completed innovative solar energy and water programs and dealt extensively with neighborhood viability, homelessness and community relations.

Gary and his wife Christine Bottaro (RN, retired) live in their home on Park Avenue, near Pioneer Park. They restored their Victorian home after acquiring it 25 years ago.

Join or Die Film

Miner's Foundry Cultural Center
325 Spring St, Nevada City, CA

A film about why you should join a club…and why the fate of America depends on it.

In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.

Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions:

What makes democracy work?

Why is American democracy in crisis?

And, most importantly… What can we do about it?

Doors open at 2:00pm

Film viewing from 3:00pm - 4:30pm.

Hosted by Nevada City 49er Rotary.  People can RSVP for a ticket (free) at www.49erRotary.org/join

Field Trip to Inn Town Campground

May 15, 2025 5:30 p.m.

ADDRESS: 9 Kidder Ct., Nevada City, Ca 95959

Plan to arrive at 5:15 for our tour at 5:30pm and ask all the questions we want.  Our guide will be Erin Theim, the owner.  We are to park at the Railroad Museum lot which is adjacent to the property.  This special Inn Town Campground is on a historic 15-acre site two miles from downtown.

Dan and Erin Thiem have brought Nevada City a vibrant camping experience with tents, glamping, and RV sites. The inn town campground is on a historic 15-acre site, just two miles from downtown Nevada City.  We love that we get to be in the heart of gold country camping, so pack your tent, trailer, or glamping gear and join us!

The Inn Town Campground was born from our love of camping, community and the outdoors.  Many of the park’s details were inspired by our personal experiences, like our open-air showers that sit beneath our towering pine trees, or our uniquely decorated Glamping tents that offer a fun break from the homogeny of daily life.  We have built indoor and outdoor spaces for people to gather to meet friends and to experience the community of stewardship that comes with enjoying our property’s intrinsic beauty.  Inn Town Campground is a reflection of our love of outdoor spaces and fun, natural areas for everyone to explore.  Imagine roaming free beneath the trees, riding your bike with friends or just sitting by a fire pit watching flames dance over a glass of wine. Camp, be outside, find new friends.

The Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Project

Jul. 17, 2025 5:30 p.m.

Hallie Anderson

Community Engagement Coordinator

As a Community Engagement Coordinator for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of California, Hallie spends her "9-5" supporting and growing local Imagination Library programs all across Northern California and the Bay Area counties. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a book gifting program created by Dolly Parton to inspire a love of reading in young children, from birth to age five. The program sends high-quality, age-appropriate books directly to children’s homes each month at no cost to families, helping to build their home libraries and encourage early literacy. The Dollywood Foundation partners with local 501(c)(3) nonprofit and other dedicated organizations and local leaders in the community who work together as Local Program Partners.

The Nevada City Rotary Foundation is one of these wonderful partners, serving as the partnering 501(c)3 and working with First 5 Nevada County to launch the Imagination Library in Nevada County this summer! Hallie grew up in Grass Valley, and supporting the soon-to-be Imagination Library of Nevada County is her heartfelt privilege. Hallie will share more about the program and progress towards launch, as well as ways Nevada City Rotary can be champions of early literacy and this program in the community.

Demystifying AI: Real Tools You Can Use Right Now

Jul. 24, 2025 12:15 p.m.

Cindy Zuelsdorf is a marketing strategist, author, and founder of Kokoro Marketing, where she helps small businesses, high-tech companies, and nonprofits take the overwhelm out of marketing and automation. She led sales, marketing, and service for a high-tech company, selling video equipment to clients like NBC, NASA, and Netflix. After years of working in broadcast media and high-pressure sales environments, Cindy discovered the power of marketing automation and never looked back. Long before AI became a buzzword, she was using tools that quietly integrated intelligent automation into everyday marketing—from lead follow-up to customer engagement. What she loves most is helping people get the word out about their business and set themselves up for real success. That insight led to the launch of her agency and the creation of her book and course, 7 Marketing Basics: Do Less and Sell More, which hit #1 on Amazon in the marketing for small business category. Her company’s name, Kokoro—a Japanese word meaning heart, mind, and spirit—reflects her commitment to marketing that connects on a human level. Her latest initiative, Kokoro Connect AI, helps small businesses use AI-powered phone and chat tools to scale with ease and show up like a bigger business—without the burnout. Cindy's non-profit work includes being on the board of the local SMPTE chapter, on the board of Veterans-TV, and the membership and marketing director for AMWA.tv. When she’s not working, you’ll find her skiing in the Sierra Nevada or hanging out with family and friends at the Yuba River.

Kiva: Small Loans Making a Big Difference

Aug. 21, 2025 5:30 p.m.

An introduction to a global nonprofit called Kiva which has worked for over 20 years to facilitate micro-lending to people without easy access to credit. There are over a billion unbanked people around the world. That’s a billion people who have very little chance of getting a loan for emergencies, for entrepreneurial activities, for schooling, or to rebuild their lives after war or displacement. Kiva is an international nonprofit that tackles this inequality. By connecting people through crowdfunded loans, Kiva has so far supported over 5 million people borrowing over 2 billion dollars in 95 countries! For as little as $25, supporters like you and I can open financial opportunities and make a one-to-one impact for women, refugees, small businesses, and communities around the world, paving the way to economic and social stability.

Scott Young

Scott Young currently teaches English at the Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning, a public charter high school in Nevada City. For the last 26 years he has lived in Nevada County, raising 5 children, teaching in a variety of schools, writing and reading poetry, directing and volunteering for nonprofits, and appearing on stage from time to time.

Social - Winnie Superette

Sep. 04, 2025 5:30 p.m.

With Winnie Superette, Anne Han has created a vibrant store that celebrates all things Asian. Mainly groceries but branching out to home goods, Winnie (named after Han’s dog) can provide ingredients that are not likely to be found elsewhere.

2025 Nevada City Chamber: New Business of the Year: Winnie Superette
Winnie Superette has quickly become more than just a food store—it is a cultural hub for Asian food and traditions. Owner Anne Han opened the market to provide access to both traditional staples and modern specialty goods, filling a gap in the local culinary scene. Looking ahead, Han plans to expand the Superette’s offerings to include cooking classes, pop-ups, and workshops, further fostering connection and accessibility through food and culture

Winnie Superette is at 315 Commercial Street in downtown Nevada City. For more information please visit www.winniesuperette.com
