Cattle Ranching in a Sustainable Manner
Feb. 08, 2024 12:15 p.m.
Tim Reid is Director of Pupil Services at Nevada Union High School. He has served as President of Nevada County Livestock Producers, the organization that helps organize the Junior Livestock Auction at the fair to support local youth in agriculture. Tim and his wife, Caitlin Oats were recognized as the 2021 Nevada County Fair Family of the Year for their unwavering support of the Fair and Draft Horse Classic. Reid attended Chico State, majoring in agricultural business, where he was an active member of the National Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team and assumed leadership roles within the California Cattlemen's Young Cattlemen's Association. His internships at a large cattle ranch in Bridgeport, California, allowed him to gain hands-on experience with extensive cattle operations and network with prominent ranchers. After college, Reid ventured into the produce industry in Salinas Valley. However, he soon returned to his roots, taking over his family's cattle operations and expanding the herd significantly. His partnership with another rancher has led to a thriving cattle business focused on sustainable year-round grazing. Reid's educational career began in Esparto, where he connected with local farming families and later moved to Grass Valley, teaching at Bear River High School. His achievements in agricultural mechanics with the FFA organization are notable, including state and national titles. Additionally, he contributes as an adjunct professor of Agriculture Business and Economics at Sierra Community College. Reid earned his administrative services credential, becoming an assistant principal at Nevada Union High School, specializing in intervention and special education. He advanced to the position of Director of Pupil Services, overseeing special education, nursing, and mental health programs. In March, he completed his doctorate in education. Reid and his wife reside in Penn Valley, where they maintain an impressive equine setup and actively participate in cattle operations. Their home is a testament to their love for the agricultural lifestyle, complete with horses ranging from ranch workers to young prospects. His wife, a veterinary technician, shares his passion for horses and contributes to the ranch's operations. Despite their busy lives, they find balance and fulfillment in their work and their shared love of the land and animals. Pearce Boyer - Thought for the Day, pledge, and 4 Way Test |

Divesting from the Climate CrisIs
Feb. 22, 2024 12:15 p.m.
Investments and environment? How do they fit? Ecology, environment, and climate are important intersections in my life’s work in education. I’ve managed personal investments for 35 years with a growing awareness of the intersection of money and climate. This awareness has shaped my financial journey, which I share with you today in “Invest-Divest – A Personal Journey”. About Eric My Berkeley childhood backyard of Tilden Regional Parks, summer High Sierra pack trips, and a rural Iowa farm-college prep boarding school education were all formative in environmental-resource awareness, understanding and enjoyment. In 1960’s San Francisco, I attained a teaching credential from San Franciso State University; co-developed student tutorial programs in low-income communities; engaged in protest targeting racial discrimination in hotel and auto dealership employment and refused induction into the Vietnam War. All expanded my social and political education. In the 1970’s, I directed residential summer camps for youth at Hidden Villa Ranch in the San Mateo foothills; built a farm and wilderness environmental education program targeting elementary school children in experiential science; and co-authored Manure to Meadow to Milkshake, while attaining a master’s in Environmental Education from Hayward State University. Publication and programs led to a faculty appointment with the University of California Cooperative Extension, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and twenty years of science education delivered by teen youth and adults through 4-H, elementary schools, and after school programs. I retired in 2000 to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Community work included Bear Yuba Land Trust easement baseline development; Sierra Streams Institute Deer Creek water monitoring, establishment of the Greater Champion Neighborhood Association, Fire Safe Council Home Advisor visits, and establishment of a Citizens Climate Lobby chapter. Today I’m active with Nevada County Climate Action Now and serve on the Nevada County Energy Action Plan Working Group.

Antarctic Photography
Mar. 14, 2024 12:15 p.m.
I create unique travel, experimental, and landscape photographs for environmentally and culturally conscious fine art collectors and enthusiasts. I began the pursuit of photography as a means of discovery into our world. I am committed to photography's mission to inspire and reveal the extraordinary in ordinary places. With over 40 years of experience in photography as a photographer and photography educator, I've photographed people, landscapes, and architecture on all seven continents. Each photograph illustrates my visual fascinations with light, color, shapes, forms, and the beauty which hides in unexpected places. My photography has been published and exhibited internationally in numerous venues. I've received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for my photography book, Situations, and has taught photography and art at multiple levels including in the MFA Graduate Photography Program at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. My photography is featured in two additional domains: My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

And the Electoral College – I mean, who among us really understands the complexities of how it works! Retired Judge Michelle McKay-McCoy, a Rotarian from Walnut Creek, does and she will be our guest speaker, helping us to unravel the complexities. Not only that, but she’s also a great backpacking partner (with Cathy)! |

Veteran Services in Nevada County
Jul. 25, 2024 12:15 p.m.
The Nevada County Veterans Services Office (NCVSO) promotes the interest and welfare of veterans, dependents, and their survivors by enhancing their quality of life through counseling, education, benefits assistance, and advocacy. We connect Veterans to their benefits by assisting in their interactions with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and hope to make the process easier when applying for benefits like Health Care, Compensation and Pension. David West - Veterans Services OfficerDavid West is the Nevada County Veterans Services Officer. He served honorably for five years in the United States Marine Corps and was the Platoon Sergeant of Communications Platoon, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. David is familiar with the struggles that veterans face when transitioning from the military service back to civilian life and uses his own life experiences to connect with the veterans of our county. David first started on his path toward a career in a Veterans Advocacy in 2007, while attending Sierra College in Rocklin, California. He was instrumental in the advocating and the development of the Veterans Resource Center that provides a place for Veterans to learn from Veterans in an environment that suits their specific needs. This model has been implemented by other colleges throughout the state. David previously worked for the Veterans Benefits Administration as a Rating Veterans Services Representative who made decisions on claims for compensation that veterans filed with the VBA. While working for the VBA, David also was selected to be a centralized trainer who taught newly hired employees how to properly process veterans claims for compensation. Additionally, he was one of 20 national candidates selected for the VA’s Leadership Augmentation Program that teaches those selected how the VA operates on a National platform. However, in 2012 he moved to Bakersfield, CA to start a family and he began a career in the Oil & Gas Industry. It was here that David learned the principles of process improvement and learned the importance of using data to influence decisions. David uses tools to ensure that the veterans of Nevada County are receiving the highest quality of services and that the VSO is continually seeking avenues to improve the services that it provides. Mr. West moved his family back to Sacramento, CA in the summer of 2018. On August 2, 2018 David formally accepted the position as the Nevada County Veterans Service Officer (VSO). As the VSO, David has used his diverse background and prior knowledge of working with the VA to provide services to the Veterans of Nevada County. |
