Retail and Real Estate in the COVID Era - Nicole Dillard & John Hensley
Our club has a few members that continue to work as business owners in Nevada City. This week’s program highlights Nicole Dillard and John Hensley, both long time club members. Join us as they share their experiences of conducting business in these challenging times. Chris Newsom will do a special Foundation Mini-Minute.
Our own doing business in the COVID Era
Nicole Dillard owns and operates An Inner Sanctum, a rare & collectibles book store on Broad Street. An Inner Sanctum has offered used books and antiques in downtown Nevada City for 20 years. Nicole is also an partner in Booktown Books, a cooperative of booksellers with 4,000 square feet of Used and Rare Books, Ephemera, Books on CDs, Music CDs, DVDs, LP Records and Art. Each Bookseller has their own booth in the store that displays their special genres of books. She has been a member of Nevada City Rotary since December 2003. Nicole has served many years as our Club Vocational Services Chair and on the Board of the Rotary Club of Nevada City Foundation. In those dual roles she is a strong advocate for scholarships for youth ~ both academic and technical training.
John Hensley "This is my 50th year in Real Estate. I started out 50 years ago selling lots in Cascade Shores. It is a wonderful business and I like it very much." After working for a Bay Area company in Nevada County for a few years, John opened his own Recreation Realty on Harmony Ridge. The company added a second office in downtown Nevada City now at the top of Broad St (home to our Board meetings pre-Zoom). A long time member of Nevada City Rotary - since 1975, John is our Club's original bridge to our partnerships in Baja. John is also a proud supporter, former Board Member, and frequent show host at KVMR. Long before any of us knew him, John was a child actor in Southern California. John’s acting career included roles in movies and television shows such as Lassie, Donna Reed, Wild Bill Hickok, Dupont Cavalcade of America, Life of Riley, Dragnet, Sheriff of Cochise, Stepmother, The Millionaire, and others. Oh, and of course, John is a big Beatles, aka Ringo fan!
Two Magic Drops - a first-hand Polio Inoculation experience on the ground in India
PDG Bob Rogers shared his personal and very inspiring story of contracting polio at the age of five. Many years later he joined Rotary. Learning of the tremendous commitment to Ending Polio globally that Rotary has made, he took up the charge within his Club, his District and now our Zone. Bob also shared a very moving video of his Rotary trip to India for Inoculation Day in January of this year (before COVID). We invite you to click the Two Magic Drops image and watch it yourself.
Bob also talked about how Rotary is assisting global COVID testing efforts based on the extensive logistics lessons our Rotary partners have learned in testing community sewage and water systems for the presence of polio and the distribution of volatile vaccines. Yes, the lessons apply to COVID.
Announcement D5190 PolioPlus Society
PolioPlus Society members will help Rotary make history by contributing a minimum of $100 per year until the World Health Organization certifies that polio has been fully eradicated because …
Until the world is polio-free, every child is at risk.

Foundation Month - Friday November 20, 2020
Area 8 & 9 Virtual Foundation Celebration with PRIP and Polio Plus Chair John Germ
November is Rotary Foundation Month. In years past we have celebrated Rotarians from Area 4 Clubs who have achieved new levels of recognition for giving to The Rotary Foundation. Due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Area 4 will not have a celebration this November. The 49er Breakfast Club is responsible for the Foundation Recognition Awards this year. They are working with our Club on plans to combine the Foundation Recognition and the Community Awards event for early Spring. More information will be provided as details are worked out.
In the meantime, you can still celebrate November Foundation Month by joining the Virtual Foundation Celebration hosted by Areas 8 & 9. PRIP John Germ will be guest speaker. Click icon to Register and donate $25 to PolioPlus. Participate in the Area 8 & 9 Virtual event and Nevada City Rotary will extend you a $15 Happy/Sad Buck credit!
Thanksgiving Day 2020
TODAY!! Tuesday, November 17th, is the last day to register for the upcoming Michael Bratton II Virtual Turkey Trot to guarantee a long-sleeved tee shirt. A great family and community event! Click REGISTER! or the banner above for more details.
Update on our Hungry Games II Event
With the uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases and the tightening of restrictions as a result, we have made the difficult decision that the Hungry Games II event scheduled for Valentines Day will not take place as a live, face-to-face event. We are looking at keeping the Valentines Day reservation at the Miners Foundry and shifting the focus of the event to the theme of “Share the Love”. The Hungry Games planning crew will start the planning process with updates on the new format coming soon.
