Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Join us this Week on Zoom: 12:15 Lunch
with Caleb Dardick, Nevada County Relief Fund
Un-Usual Usual
It is Sunday afternoon and as I started to write this Rotario I was thinking that “unusual” will need to be the new go-to term to describe things. We certainly can’t look at things and say “as usual” anymore. Take for example, the weather the last couple of weeks. One day we are in the 60’s and the next we are up to the 90’s. Friday I was digging my summer t-shirts out and today I’m digging my sweatshirts back out again. As I drove through town yesterday the Broad Street overcrossing was crowded with people holding up various signs expressing their views. Friday Carolyn Inglis and I exchanged telephone calls and emails as she worked on signage for our “mask giveaway.” Did we think as we started this Rotary year we would be doing mask giveaways for a Community Service project? Did we even think it six months ago? I had it firmly in my mind that everything “usual” is gone and we have entered the “unusual twilight zone.”
But as I reflected on things, I had to change my mind. Who am I kidding? The weather at this time of year is always ricocheting between temperature highs and lows like a pinball game gone nuts. For one reason or another, crowds are always gathered on the Broad Street overcrossing letting their views be known by holding up signs. A mask giveaway, maybe not what we have done for Community Service before but still a need for the community that our Rotary Club has seen and is filling just like we always do. Another usual event with an unusual twist – an upcoming Demotion Party and a new, energetic President ready to step in and take us to new heights. It’s true we have a few more uncertainties as we transition into Tom Milam’s 2020-2021 year but I’m excited to see where things go. Our Club has always been resilient. When we lost our meeting space, we found another. When we had unexpected financial problems, we tightened our belts, increased our giving and came through stronger in the end. Lately we have faced in-person meeting restrictions that we have never faced before. But, as always, we got creative and dove into a new way of meeting via Zoom. During these “unusual” times, our Club, as USUAL, is adapting and thriving. Yes, we are an Unusual Usual Rotary Club and I am so proud of each and every one of you for making us that way!
COVID-19 FREE Mask Give Away
This Saturday June 13 from 10am to 12noon, Nevada City Rotary will partner with Masked Warriors of Nevada County for a Free Mask Give Away at Dave's Auto Repair, 747 Zion St, Nevada City. “What is it? Where is it?”
I hope you have been paying extra close attention to some of the details on buildings and things around town. Who knows when you’ll be asked “What is it? Where is it?” again.
This Week: 12:15 Lunch with Caleb Dardick, Nevada County Relief Fund
Nevada County Relief Fund Announces $210,000 in First-Round Grant Awards For this week's Lunch Zoom, Caleb Dardick, Project Administrator in the County Nevada County's CEO's office will give a first hand account of how Nevada County has stepped up to support our most vulnerable neighbors and small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Faced with unprecedented hardships, the newly formed “Nevada County Relief Fund” and the “Tahoe Truckee Emergency Response Fund” are coordinating a countywide philanthropic response. The shared goal is to direct vital resources to our most vulnerable neighbors served by nonprofit organizations as well as small businesses vital to our quality of life who were forced to close their doors due to the shelter-in-place orders.
Caleb Dardick is a long-time Nevada County resident who moved to our community when he was only 8 years old. Throughout his career Caleb has worked in public relations and public affairs consulting for business, political and nonprofit clients before serving as executive director for the South Yuba River Citizens League from 2011 to 2017. Caleb is the son of former Nevada County supervisor and disability rights activist Sam Dardick. You may recall, when Cathy hiked the Camino Santiago, Caleb shared his father’s story as a polio survivor on a moving video as part of our End Polio Now campaign.
Join us and learn how the generosity of our County and Community working together is helping non-profits and small businesses.
Preparing for the Year Ahead
Combined 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 Board Retreat Monday June 15
5:30pm via Zoom
PE Tom Milam is inviting outgoing and incoming Board Members and Committee Chairs to participate in a Leadership Planning Retreat via Zoom Monday June 15 at 5:30pm until no later than 8:00pm. Board members, watch for details and agenda. June 15 is our normally scheduled Board Meeting.
Check your email for your dues invoice!
As we noted last week, on July 1 we launch our new Rotary year which means with June comes annual dues invoices. Under normal circumstances our Club dues would be billed at $180 for the year (or $190 if paid in increments). Due to these unprecedented circumstances, District 5190 is granting all our club members a “dues holiday” for July through December 2020. This means that the District portion of our dues for July 1 will be $0 instead of $19 for the first half of the year. On your invoice, you will see this year's dues reduced to $161 (or $171 if you choose to pay in increments). Give a shout out to District Governor Randy Van Tassell and District Governor Elect, Berta Pickett who requested approval from the District Finance Committee for this "dues holiday"!
Invoices were sent last week by our incoming Treasurer Tom Ryan from our new QuickBooks Accounting System. If you have not seen yours, please contact Tom directly. Many thanks!
