Nevada County Wine (American Palate) with Mary Anne Davis
Welcome to 2021!
The new year is here, bringing hopes of a better and brighter year…
I’m not big on making New Year’s resolutions, but I am looking forward to an eventual return to a more normal life and resolve to make the most of it!
Here’s hoping that we all will continue to be healthy, and that we can once again enjoy working and playing side by side before too much of 2021 has passed.
From Mines to Vineyards - Nevada County Wine
Sit down with your favorite Nevada County wine, and join fellow Rotarian and author (among many other talents), Mary Anne Davis as she explores the family vineyards of the California foothills. Mary Anne published a delightful and informative book, Nevada County Wines in April 2020. She has made fascinating connections between our rich Gold Country mining history and our local wine industry.
Nevada County's tumultuous wine history includes several booms and busts, starting in the 1850s when gold prospectors brought the first grapevines in their saddlebags. Economic downturns, prohibition and war all tried to kill the fledgling wine industry, but it hung on thanks to gentleman farmers and members of the mining industry who supplied a thirsty clientele. Today, although the mines have gone quiet, wineries are thriving in the hills of the Gold Country, and the pioneering spirit lives on in their distinctive vintages and growing techniques.
Mary Anne serves as Marketing and Events Manager for Hospice of the Foothills and is an active member and past president of the 49er Breakfast Rotary Club.
Virtual International Project Fairs - in 2021
In January and February of the new year, we have the unique opportunity of participating in virtual Project Fairs. Remember when we learned all about Project Fairs from our speaker Jon Gresley (Truckee Club) last September? Well, now we have an opportunity to participate in two virtual Project Fairs at the end of this month and in February.
The fairs are on Zoom and open to all Rotarians, at no cost. This arrangement is ideal for learning how project fairs work without leaving the comfort of your home and with no travel expenses. So, take advantage!
Registration for the two upcoming Project Fairs:
- Uniendo America, January 28-30, 2021 in Panama City, Panama: https://projectfair4240-4250.org/register

Around our Community
Dr. Scott Kellermann is our newly appointed Nevada County Public Health Officer and will be our guest speaker on February 4, 2021. He will be speaking to the COVID vaccine program and community. A number of you participated in the Nevada County Flu Clinic last fall. As the County rolls out the COVID vaccine we can expect similar clinics. Scott has reminded us that to volunteer to support clinics, volunteers need to be registered at https://www.healthcarevolunteers.ca.gov/.
Our Club has known Dr Kellermann for many years through our partnership with the initial Uganda project to bring clean water and medical care to the Batwa people.
Your Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!
Thank you Treasurer Tom Ryan for your ongoing diligence with our finances. And thank you Club members for following the Four Way Test with your pledges to our Club! If you have questions, Tom R is happy to discuss your statement with you.
Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary. They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom. Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond. Thanks for sharing you!
Stay connected and informed
Robin monitors our news@ncrotary.org email. You can direct questions to that email or to me. As we learn more and to stay in touch, we will send out regular or more frequent Rotarios.
