Vaccinating Nevada County:
Through this collaborative effort, we will get the job done!
Dr. Scott Kellermann, Nevada County Public Health Officer
Nevada City Rotary leadership thru 2024!
Thanks again and congratulations to Tom Ryan and Dave Denney for stepping up to lead our club as co-presidents next Rotary year! Their decision to co-lead the club gets 2021 off to a great start.
Our Club leadership now has continuity for the next three years, with Carolyn Feuille and Chris Newsom working as Co-Presidents for the 2022-2023 Rotary year, and Kim Stewart leading the Club for 2023-2024. In stepping up, Kim declared her year as president as "one of the best years of my life!" Kim noted that her previous term as Club President was 2003-2004, so it is very fitting that she return as President 20 years later!
I hope everybody has seen the special edition Rotario we sent out last Thursday (12/28) to announce the news that Tom and Dave will be club co-presidents next year, but if you missed it, check your email, or here’s the link to the Special Edition Presidents Elect.
Membership - we want to hear from you
Club members recently received an email with a Membership Survey developed by our Membership Chair Cathy Wilcox-Barnes. Cathy is requesting that you return the survey to her by February 20, but I am asking that you not delay completing and returning the survey. Please take some time to read and fill in any sections that apply to you, and return your survey promptly. Cathy, the Club Board of Directors, and Prez Tom rely on input from all club members to help us determine what is working for the club and where we need to make changes to improve member engagement. Can't find your email, click 2021 Membership Survey to download and complete your survey. Please return directly to Cathy or to news@NCRotary.org.
The recognition that the Nevada County Food Bank was facing shortages of food to assist those in need has now resulted in our club partnering with them in several ways. We donated a huge pallet of canned food that is being delivered this week. To supplement that donation, our club is holding a canned food drop-off event on February 13 (See more details below), and on March 3rd and 17th, we have the opportunity to support the Food Bank by packing food bags for home delivery. From 9-11:30am each day, up to 6 Club members will pack bags of fresh and canned foods. Susie will be coordinating sign-ups as we get closer to the March dates.

Dr. Scott Kellermann, Nevada County Public Health Officer
Beginning January 1, 2021, Dr. Scott Kellermann stepped up as County of Nevada Public Health Officer to shepherd our County through the urgent immunization campaign to end the current COVID-19 pandemic. No one could be more perfectly qualified for this assignment at this critical time. A highly qualified physician, public health has been his calling. Dr. Kellermann received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine with a Master’s in Public Health and Master’s in Tropical Medicine. He is a Senior Consultant for the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID), through the National Institute of Health and UC Davis. Through CREID he has been on the frontline of SARS and Ebola.
After practicing medicine in Nepal for 2 ½ years, Dr. Kellermann moved with his family to practice medicine in Nevada County. He was Chief-of-Staff at Sierra Nevada Hospital and served two terms on the Sierra Nevada Hospital Board. In 1987, he and Drs. Chargin and Dawkins purchased Miners Hospital on Zion Street converting it into an outpatient facility to medically assist those less fortunate.
A fellow 49er Rotarian, our Club knows him best through the Uganda projects with the Batwa pygmies. In 2001, he and his wife Carol relocated to Uganda where he founded the 175 bed Bwindi Community Hospital, now ranked one of the finest hospitals in East Africa. He also founded the Uganda Nursing School-Bwindi, with a current enrollment of 400 nursing students. A number of you traveled with our "On To Uganda" project. Inside a 23,000-pound shipping container, Rotarians built a complete x-ray lab and dental suite. The container loaded with $100,000 worth of supplies and equipment was shipped to Bwindi Medical Centre to support the Batwa Pygmies. We also supported clean water and goats for community development projects.
