Dear Rotarians and Friends,
This Week Social Mixer: Chris Newsom Craft Talk and Welcome Home President Cathy!
Our own Chris Newsom will be our showcase speaker for this week's Social Mixer. Chris has been an active member ~ often with her husband Bill for two years and is sure to delight us with her personal stories.
Christine Mueller Newsom was born in San Francisco in 1946 and grew up on the San Francisco peninsula, the third of four girls. She knew from the time she was in junior high school that she wanted to be a doctor, although she did take somewhat of an academic detour while attending UC Davis by majoring in German and spending her junior year in Germany. She entered the inaugural class of the UC Davis School of Medicine when it opened in 1968, where she met her husband, Bill. After graduating in 1972, they moved back to San Francisco to finish their residencies, started their medical practices, and had their first child, Peter.
After soon realizing that they didn’t want to raise a family in the City, Bill and Chris decided to look elsewhere in northern CA, and fell in love with Nevada City, moving here in 1981. Two daughters, Joanna and Emily, were born soon afterward. Life kind of becomes a blur after that!….career, family-raising, home-building….before long, three decades had gone by, the kids had left the nest and it was time for retirement.
Life remains full, with lots of volunteer activities, some time for music, travel, and play; and most fascinating: the search for whatever connects us all.

Last Week Carolyn Feuille ~ Astana Kazakhstan Twin Club
Carolyn Feuille delighted us all with photos and details of her recent trip to Astana, Kazakhstan. All of our Open World delegates except Ruslan (who lives in Almaty 500 miles from Astana) were able to join in at least two of the many activities they hosted for her. She gave updates on our delegates and shared her many wonderful cultural experiences. The entrepreneurial spirit among several of the delegates is alive and thriving especially for Emin and Aizhan who are both expanding their businesses. The photo of Emin shows a sample of the wooden furniture he added to his products. Aizhan is now marketing a tea with her photo
She did a Rotary Friendship Exchange and stayed with Lyazzat Alshinova, the Astana Rotary Club president, and her family. She shared our Twin Club Certificate for Nevada City Rotary Astana Rotary.
In Astana, Carolyn also stayed with Open World delegate Aizhan Mukatayeva. Thanks to Elena and Astana Rotary her schedule was packed ~ turnabout for her coordination of the Kazahstan team visit to Nevada City!
Girls Who Code is now in session & You can participate!
A new Girls Who Code session has started at our new location in Seven Hills Middle School. There are currently 22 girls enrolled, with a couple more expressing interest. This is a younger group, with lots of giggles and fidgeting, and with a positive attitude for the opportunities ahead.
A sweet way for you to participate:
Treating the girls to refreshments one or more times throughout the school year is a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program.
Dave Bunje is circulating a signup sheet for our support with refreshments for the girls each week. The girls certainly appreciate the snacks. Dave suggests that it is good to bring something sweet, something salty, including something filling. Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. Lynn Ching has set the bar with hard boiled eggs, sliced apples with almond butter, popcorn and red vines. If you have not signed up for a slot in coming months, please contact Dave. Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!
Please note: NEW PLACE AND TIME: The club now meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.

WORDS OF WISDOM:
“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren't any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn't be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life's challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.” ― R. Buckminster Fuller
