Rotario September 6, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Social Mixer 5:30pm - Thursday September 6, 2018

Craft talk by Tom Milam
Trolley Junction Restaurant at The Northern Queen
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959 Directions

Welcome to September or in Rotary terms Basic Education and Literacy Month.

We start the month off being educated by our very own and very literate Tom Milam with his craft talk at this Thursday’s mixer.  Come a little early if you can as there will be a slight change to the regular meeting format and with any luck we will start the meeting exactly on time and Tom’s craft talk will start promptly thereafter.  The reason for the hurry up and start is that I’ve heard from several members that they have a conflicting meeting on Thursday, and they would like to leave early.  I will do my best to keep the meeting moving along so that those that wish to leave early can do so without being rude to our speaker.

Staying on theme next week’s speakers are the Dean, John Parkhouse, and the Principal, Erica Crane, of the Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL).  They will be introducing themselves and their school to us and informing us on their very successful and unique educational program.   Please come and hear about this school, as they are very high on the list in our search for an Interact Club.

SAEL just moved into the Nevada City Elementary building this fall. Want an advance look at their approach as a college preparatory charter school?  Watch their video:

And for even more school involvement, Nancy Kemp will be bringing a signup sheet for Girls Who Code at Seven Hills.  Nancy has made all of the necessary contacts and we are set to help out with the club and provide snacks.  If you’ve done it before you know all about it and if you haven’t here is another incredible opportunity to become involved and participate with the youth in our community.

The following week our education continues with a field trip led by Dennis Geare to Ensemble Design with lessons on Rotary Tech Made Easy.  If you don’t believe that tech can be easy come on out and watch Dennis show you how.  If you already know how let Dennis show you how to navigate the tech of Rotary.

We are setting up for another great month and after being 5th Thursday dark last week I can’t wait to get back together with all of my best friends.

Upcoming Partnership Events:

SYRCL's Annual Clean Up - on Miner's Trail

Don't forget to sign up for the Miner’s Trail clean up (listed as Deer Creek Downtown Nevada City) on September 15 as a part of SYRCL’s Annual Clean Up.

Random Acts of Event - RAKE at Pioneer Park

Amelia Barrett is running the Pioneer Park Rake Event (on behalf of NCAOR) location this year on Saturday, October 6th from 9am to 12pm.  RAKE stands for Random Acts of Kindness and is an annual event that supports Anew Day, which was an organization that was created when Michael Bratton JR took his life many years ago.

It's an AWESOME and SHORT one day event to clean the community.  Amelia's location is, and always has been since the inception of this event, Pioneer Park.  We meet that morning and pick up trash and this year we get to also PAINT Seamans Lodge!  For those who don't know, our Club has a special connection with Seaman's Lodge. Our own local historian Cathy Wilcox-Barnes reminded us that in the 1930's Nevada City Rotary built the bathroom and kitchen extensions. The new facilities were required by Boy Scouts of America in order for the local scout troop to meet in the Lodge.

Amelia would LOVE for NC Rotarians to sign up with her to represent Nevada City!  Click the RAKE icon or register online at: http://therakeevent.com/projects/?action=evregister&event_id=29
